Just watched it again. From the 7 times I've seen it, I still don't think it's nearly as bad a movie as the reviews would suggests. What really makes the movie for me was how well the Autobots were done. That and likeable humans, great action, Lockdown and less of that cringeworthy humor equals a win for me. Also the movie looks effin' spectacular on the TV I have back home.

    8.5/10

I watched it for the 4th time last night. I think it could be a little less rushed. They kinda wasted a few minutes of the movie with unnesscary scenes but o well. I think they could have given a better explantion of what happened between Dotm and Aoe.

Since a few people have talked about rewatching the film, I decided I might as well, having just gotten the DVD. This was the first time I've rewatched the film in it's entirety.

Overall, I love having another TF film I can watch without groaning every five minutes at how disrespectful it is to the rest of the franchise, even if it wasn't that well made. I think my brain did turn off towards the end because of how long it is. But I was never bored. Heck, the much complained about magnet scene is one of my favorite scenes in the climax.

The Dinobots really feel out of place. Two or more hours into a dark and gritty film about a government organization committing genocide and dead aliens being turned into weapons for advancement of technology, then suddenly giant robot dinosaurs turn up!!! WTF?

Not to mention, when you're not paying attention to every move in the fights, the Dinobots' scenes go past far too quickly. Heck, half of their fights are more focused on Optimus. It's like the film doesn't want to be showing them. Maybe it doesn't.

Bay said he didn't want to do Dinobots, and I'm certain I read they were someone else's idea. Maybe Bay is the weak link of the film's creation. Everyone else thought of a bunch of plots, and Bay made a film with all of them cobbled together, not caring. And maybe Bay's lack of caring is why the film doesn't take a dump on the rest of the franchise.

ok, to be perfectly honest guys, I rate AOE below ROTF. (although both are below DOTM and TF1) heresy, I know. before you rage on me, allow me to explain my reasons.

the robots: now I get that people hated the alien look of the robots in the first three movies, me personally? I liked the more alien like designs, it helped to push the idea that these guys are FROM ANOTHER PLANET. its clear that for AOE the design team wanted to humanize the bots. while human like faces work well with G1 aesthetics, the combination of organically angled faces with typical movie bodies created a design I found rather odd, reaching its peak in Lockdown. which brings me to the cons, or should I say robostormies. these guys make the Stromtroopers look like tactical spec ops soldiers! not only does a single Autobot slaughter them by the dozens, they also die from a few hits. truly Galvatron has too much faith in them. and then there's the partsforming, which seems to have been added solely to advertise Kreo. while the movies have never been kind to the cons, and mass drone armies don't really work with Transformers, AOE suffers heavily from these two flaws. now, on to the bots themselves. Prime: this guy seems to have taken a few thumps to the skullplate. hate to break it to you prime, but helping the very species who KILLED YOUR OWN MEN makes you a massive hypocrite. Bumblebee: lets face it, BB is the face of the franchise, and while he had finally matured by DOTM , AOE drops him back into the role of naïve child. Drift: while Drift has a muddled history, with his "mary sue" traits in the idw comics, this version of him draws heavily from Japanese culture, this is played a little over-the-top at times. Crosshairs: I actually sorta liked his guy, perhaps because his character was completely original (the previous crosshairs were nothing like this) and thus I had no bias tward what I expected him to be like. Hound: this guy really should have been called Bulkhead. hes a large green vehicle, with a pronounced chin (a beard in the movie) and wears an old styled army helmet. I don't know much about previous Bulkheads, so I cant say if his personification is similar, but he is certainly no hound. Galvatron: a repackaged Megatron, with Welkers voice (yay), not much more to say. Stinger: a red Bumblebee, really just a throwaway character. Lockdown: I don't know what, but something about this guy makes me mad, its either his cheezy, cringe worthy lines or the fact that his face is just so darn UGLY.

the advertising: OMG BUY WHATEVERS ON SCREEN EVERY FIVE SECONDS!!!

the humans: ill be honest, I couldnt give two energon cubes about the humans. there all forgettable, one dimensional throwaways. oh, and theres an underage sex joke in there, ya'know, because that's what little Sally and her parents want to see.

the plot: mans out of his luck, buys truck. truck turns out to be robot. (seem familiar?) man and daughter caught in robot bounty hunt, overaged boyfriend saves the day, comedy relief dies. wait, who are these robots?! revenge time! oh no megatron lives! LETS PANDER TO CHINA! drones unleashed, prime captured. DINOBOTS!! prime suddenly gains rocket boots. the end.

Caught it on DVD with the fiance. Fun movie, if long. We enjoyed watching it, despite the problems it has.

While the movie wasn't as bad as the Major critics reviewed it, Michael Bay managed to stick to clichees and massive Explosion Scenes one after another while the bad TFs are just treated like random Targets like the Xenomorphs in ALIENS.

As for other Comic/Cartoon adaptions into live Action, I must say the Marvel and DC movies from the recent years are way better than the Michael Bay TF movies.
The only good Thing Bay contributed is that the transformations look great.
I don't seek a TF movie with much depth but the Level of Story and dialogs/Action scenes should be at least acceptable and more balanced.

I thought it was a very well made action movie. The effects and fight scenes were very well done, and who doesn't like watching giant robot dinosaurs cause some havoc?

That being said, the story was very lackluster. The Dinobots had no backstory, no character and were not even named in the movie, their only description being from Optimus, praising them as "legendary warriors." Whatever connection to the original trilogy existed was very disjointed, and at times nonexistent; for instance the most egregious of these cases occurs when the Autobots explain the origins of the Transformers and the Seed; an explanation which completely contradicts the original origin story involving the Allspark and the 7 Primes. The interaction between Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz's characters came off as cliché and grows very old very fast, as while in the opening scenes, it seems Tessa Yeager is the stronger individual, the tables quickly turn and she is reduced to a whimpering mess constantly calling for "dad" to bail her out. The same inconsistencies in how powerful Transformers are carry over from the original movies, with humans capable of easily dispatching transformers (even being able to wield Cybertronian weaponry with no difficulty). Disparities between the Cybertronians themselves arise frequently; Optimus, for instance, kicks Grimlock to the curb, but then has his chromed bumper handed to him by Lockdown, a 'bot half his size. What really kills it is how Humans are now capable of manufacturing "transformers" (which are partsformers to the Nth degree, making them more like morphers) a mere five years after the Chicago battle, when before they were unable to even access Transformer technology without explicit direction by the Autobots themselves. Don't even get me started on how big of a hypocrite Optimus is.

I really like the Autobot interaction, but the film ended on like 6 different occasions and the Deceptions are nameless foes. I do like it more than I thought I ever would, but it's not something I see myself revisiting much.
