Sorry if a thread like this already exists, I figured it's probably been a while though. I know it's kind of odd to bring this up on a TF site, but I thought I'd mention it. Everything I say here applies to the movieverse.

Which one is a better film franchise? Transformers, or Pacific Rim? I got to thinking, that in my mind, both films are very similar. Both are big summer blockbuster type movies that have:
    Big, loud, explosive fight scenes
    Giant robots
Humans (for the most part) with little to no personality
Poor plot, and/or weak backstory with too little explanation.
    Told from the human's perspective

But in my mind, Pacific Rim is still so much betrer than Transformers because:
The human characters were pretty decent actors
You can tell what's happening during the fights
The robots aren't outrageously detailed, they look cool
    The robots weren't stereotypical
The dating scenes were limited to loose, cute flirting that's barely even noticable
The appeal of the movie are the robots (and Kaiju) AKA what peopke came to see, instead of Megan Fox/Whoever Acts In TF3/Nicola Peltz, who no one even cares about seeing anyway
    Less swearing and no innuendo
    The humor is funny

    And most importantly:
Pacific Rim is a completely original story, with no superior 1980's cartoon to compare it to

So which "Big Awesome Dumb Robot Movie" is better?

Well, one of your choices has only had one film, and is thus not a film franchise to begin with.

I just meant comparing the films themselves the Pacific Rim film vs the Transformers films, "franchise" probably wasn't the best choice of words on my part.

I think key difference is also that Transformers films tend to be overly long and stuffed with filler that often goes nowhere. Pacific Rim is shorter with less filler so it's a more stream lined film.

But the reason we are talking franchise with one and not with the other comes down to marketing. Transformers had one of the best marketing teams in the business so they knew exactly how and who to target the film to. Pacific Rim, sadly the studio had no clue at all how to market the film and the box office reflects not properly targeting people for that must see it now feeling. Well in the US, outside of the US the film had better marketing teams.

To be perfectly frank, I prefer Pacific Rim over the Transformers movies. They were fun, sure, but Pacific Rim kept me engaged throughout its length, whereas the other films occasionally lost their rhythm/strayed into boring territories before they picked up again.

Pacific Rim, action-wise, is way better than any of the Transformers movies. I'm sure about that. Overall, Pacific Rim is better than any of the Transformers movies because it doesn't have the Michael Bay jokes, the straight up awful Michael Bay characters (Skids, Mudflap, Leo, Megan Fox), or Michael Bay's distracting military involvement

And el oh el to the "superior 1980s carton" comment. Son, take those nostalgia goggles off.

If I compared, in my opinion the best TF movie, the first one, against Pacific Rim; I'd give it to Pacific Rim. It's close, but I think Pacific Rim was just a better film. The main reason TF would even be able to compete in my mind has to due mainly to nostalgia for the TF franchise.

As far as the other TF versus Pacific Rim, it's not even close.

I do like them both. The OP asked which one we thought was better.

I thought Pacific Rim was really weak; the acting fell flat, and the story was extremely contrived and cliche, and there wasn't any chemistry between any of the characters.

Essentially, I thought Pacific Rim's human characters were not any better than Transformers, and in some cases worse. And Pacific Rim's mechs and monsters didn't have any personality at all....while Transformers at least has some fun with many of the robots.

Yea I've often felt the one and only reason I've watched the films is because it has the Transformers name on it. Another title, no Autobot or Decepticon names and I don't think I would have watched any of them. It's sort of like I've watched the bad cartoon series so I'll deal with all the bad stuff in the movies just to keep up my Transformers nerd cred.

Plus none of the Transformers movies have a very obvious gay porn spoof in their title, which Pacific Rim also has in its favour...

I'm actually only 17 years old, and I became a TF fan a year before the first film was released (although I didn't even know about the upcoming film when I first became interested.), so it's not really a matter of me being nostalgic, I just think it's foolish to make a film about a preexisting subject, and change everything. Either make something fresh like Pacific Rim, or keep it the same like WFC.

Wait...what do you mean? The Pacific Rim are the counties that border the Pacific Ocean if I'm not mistaken.

Both have robots and have some bad human acting. That is it in similarities. Pacific rim and transformers are no where near each other's league. Pacific rim is a nod to Japanese giant monster movie being a tribute to franchises like Toho monster movies, power rangers and gundum. Transformers goes out more against superhero comic book movies with there a bad guy lets stop his evil plan plots. There is no need to say what the better movie because you are asking a question like what tastes better apples or cheeseburgers.

Mttyns is referring to a sexual act designated as a rim-job. You can see where people connect that dot.

Okay, I wasn't familiar with that term. Pacific Rim certainly wasn't named after it though because Pacific Rim is 100 times more wholesome than Transformers. And to anyone who'd like to argue I must remind them that we call ourselves"Transfans". Sorry if I offended anyone with this reference.

It's ok, no offence taken. Rimming I can handle, but I draw the line at trans.

I'll admit PR is a little bit better than the first TF, PR is an 8.5/10, while I give TF1 an 8/10.

ROTF: Not even close...3/10. DOTM: Still not close, but way better than ROTF. 6/10.

The TF series overall are better than the following movies I've seen IMO:
    G.I.Joe movies
    TMNT movies
    The Smurfs
    Green Lantern
RE series( In fact most video game movies except Wreck It Ralph)
    Battleship
    Dragonball Evolution
    Judge Dredd(1995)
    The Last Airbender
    After Earth
And I'm pretty sure there are more.

By the way OP, I hope your thread doesn't attract too many haters here cause this kind of thread can bring up a flame war.
