This needs to be bolded and centered on the top of the movie forum.

Totally agree here. If I watch one of Bay's movies on mute, it's amazing. He absolutely has an eye for striking visuals. But he needs to stay the hell out of the writing process. It's the crude or stupid humor that kills it. And honestly, I don't even mind that the first movie was as human-centric as it was. It was the first, and they needed a way to bring the audience into it. But they should have gone for less in the second two. And they absolutely should have lost Sam halfway through RotF.

Paul Verhoeven or Luc Besson, but that seems pretty unlikely in both cases.

Michael Bay would be an interesting choice.

I think James Mangold is a contender. He's coming off of Wolverine, so he knows his way around an action script, and is known for movies with strong female lead characters, which TF4 supposedly has.

I also think the producers might take a hard look at James Wan. Yeah, he's mostly known for horror fare, but appears to be directing Fast & Furious 7, so he might see TF5 as the next step up the ladder to mainstream summer tentpole, and if he can shoot car chases and explosions well, so much the better. And The Conjuring is getting strong reviews and box office. And he was born in '77, so... childhood TF fan, maybe?

Don't worry - it's going to be him for TF5 and TF6 anyway. Bay directing TF movies is going to probably outlast the entire Transformers brand. He'll be the last one to leave and turn off the lights as he goes.

Maybe. Atleast he would ensure that the movie franchise remains the best thing ever to come out of the transformers franchise.

As long as he wasn't aping Tarantino in any way, and wasn't inserting offensive low-rider Autobot characters who carry giant weaponized weed wackers, it could work. He would have to learn the source material and respect it though.

    Whedon.

Avengers is the perfect balance of popcorn fluff, thrilling action and pitch perfect character work. Of course much of this is down to his quite phenomenal skills as a screenwriter. The dialogue for Avengers is superb.

If you can get someone like him to produce the screenplay, there are plenty of extremely talented directors who would perform admirably, they just don't fall into the cliched 'Cameron, Jackson, Nolan' suggestions that typify geek wishlists.

Incidentally - although he'd never do it in a million years - Peter Jackson would be a horrible match for Transformers. I think something people get carried away with is the need for Transformers to constantly be 'epic'. In fact it works better to limit this notion. Avengers is hugely entertaining, but none of it tries to be larger scale than it is. Much of the New York battle is devoted to single character moments rather than the non-stop limitless destruction that Mr Bay relishes. Therin lies the skill.

Fuck, I detest the man. Horrible, horrible direction and absolutely no interest in a script at all. He'd happily produce nothing but 90 minutes of surprisingly ultra-violent 'shit blowing up' if he was allowed.

Whedon is indeed the perfect choice if you want a generic, blandly directed movie devoid of any artistic qualities. But I guess thats what most of you want.

I love Chris Nolan. I love his movies. But I don't think he could do a Transformers movie. He's more human with his movies, and I don't think Transformers could work for him.

JJ Abrams: I can see that working. I think I need to see his version of Star Wars, though.

Joss Wedon: Maybe. But seeing how he treated giant robots in Avengers, I say it's more wasteful than in Bay's take.

Del Toro: I haven't seen Pacific Rim, but I think he could pull it off. The reviews of that movie are more positive than a guy after a night with a diseased hooker.

But I agree with this. Keep:
    George Lucas
    M. Night Shamalong
    Joel Schumaker

    away from Transformers.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. Seriously. The final New York battle is superbly directed. It just isn't filled with ridiculous 'look at meeeeeee!' money shots that serve absolutely no purpose in building the pace and atmosphere of a scene. Grandstanding nonsense in action sequences is absolutely murdering Hollywood at the moment. Just let stuff breathe for goodness sake.

Not to mention that the phrase 'artistic qualities' and 'Michael Bay' are so diametrically opposite, that they almost erase each other.*

*Although I will give Bay bits of the freeway chase sequence from DOTM - particularly the Bumblebee transformation. It's just a shame that the scene served no purpose at all in driving the story forward and just sat there, waiting to conclude, so that other shit could happen.
