Michael Bay is known for on-location filming, having real setpieces and stunts take place, and utilizing as little blue-screens as possible. Case in point: he actually put Shia LaBeouf on a building ledge in the first film for Megatron’s ultimatum to Sam, but the following sequence (Optimus does a Spider-Man) utilized a blue screen. The same in ROTF for when Grindor abducted Sam – real vehicles and props were used, but it was major blue screen for interior shots. And DOTM had the birdmen sequence, which could have been done blue-screen but Bay wanted it real.

MBay is arguably limited in sticking to real-life shooting. If Bay used more blue-screens, we could get some fantastic setpieces that might not be possible otherwise. We could have battles on Cybertron with humans participating, subs battling Seacons, parachuters bailing on aerial Decepticons, etc.

On the other hand, maybe the CGI in these films is utilized just right, with no need for screens. Keeping it real, well, keeps it real and fierce. And no one knows how to do Bayhem and Baysplosions quite like MBay.

What do you think? Should MBay try using more bluescreens, or are you just fine with the CGI in the real world setup?

Very easy answer. He should use them when the plot demands it and if the budget allows. Nothing more, nothing less

Ehh....I'd rather avoid needing to use blue screens. I woul,d prefer to use practical effects and real world settings.

Honestly, his use of real-world shooting locations has resulted in some of his best shots, so no, I don't think so.

No more than what's needed. The best things in movies are things that look 100% real and to make it appear that way, it has to be shot in a real environment.

I know someone who thought the birdmen sequence in DOTM was ridiculous. Cue reaction when I told him that those were real.

Why would I want something fake when it can be real?

Do as much real, but use greenscreen when required. Sometimes it's easier and cheaper to shove a screen up and not be able to tell the difference between that and a shot done for real.
I imagine many people watch movies and often don't realise there's a lot more after the fact added-in stuff then they know, such as set extensions, background crowds and vehicles and other tweaks.

Sure there are many examples of greenscreen done poorly and you can spot that shit in and instant, but as long as the effects are finished properly and the director gets the best from his actors to sell the shot of someone hanging off a high building or whatever then it's all good.

    Blue/green screen only when required.

Agreed. As much as I loved the Avengers, there's parts in the final battle that are very obviously blue screen, and I feel like it distracts from the action.

Then it would be like Avatar, completely obvious it's fake........on second thought yes add more BS. Then the fan hate would flow like rivers.

In all seriousness like everyone else has said no. DO as much as can possibly done on real set locations.

Bluescreen? Just use whatever is the best tool for the job on a case by case basis.

I knew they were real and it was still a ridiculous sequence.

    These.

Bay's known for his penchant for filming as much as can practically, and I want it to stay that way. Each movie has included more and more visual effects-heavy scenes and completely computer generated shots and sequences, but he hasn't - and probably never will - resort to levels of Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and the like. CG robots and CG wide-scale destruction with as much live-action photography and on-set locations as possible is the best way to go. And as Bumblethumper pointed out, it's a case-by-case basis. If the script/budget/scheduling calls for bluescreen usage, then so be it. But using more bluescreen for the sake of using more bluescreen is pointless.

While I found the sequence to be awesome, a lot of people have difficulty believing that such methods would be used in a combat mission. As skilled as real-life "squirrel suit flyers" are, falling and gliding through the air at 100+ kmh with only slight adjustments of your body position being the only difference between flying and smashing into a mountain probably isn't the best choice in a military situation. Great for getting from point A to point B. Which, one could argue was the point in the movie. They knew they had no other choice. ("If we want to get in, we're gonna' have to wing-suit in.")

I was also never really convinced on the part of them being able to effectively fly several Osprey's into downtown Chicago, when the Cons took down two fighter jets with complete ease, despite the fact that they're able to fly much, much faster. There is no way in hell Lennox's team would've been able to make it that far.

If I was one of those Osprey pilots I'd have been pissed that I was essentially a distraction for the squirrel men to fly in and that I was definitely going to die. The wing-suiters were off flying about as little targets while I was left as the big target that was definitely going to get blown up first.
And then a load of other military guys turn up without suffering any casualites after having swam in via the river system (or whatever that water thing was).

    Yeah...and there's also that too.

"We're gonna' have to wing-suit in! ... Or fly Ospreys. Or swim in through the canals. F**k it, just run down the street like the inevitable reinforcements will." :lol
