Pfft... we heard that ROTF would be "darker... and then again how DOTM would be "darker". It's just the cliche go-to term that everyone has been dropping since Batman Begins. Nothing new here.

That wasnt dark... they were hit by a laser and went poof and we saw some corpses. If they want to make it dark they need to have more deaths like Ironhide - except make the mean something by having characters we give a damn about.

Essentially think of this like Pirates of the Carribean 4... only a few returning cast, barely any refrences to the previous films, made with the sole intent of rebooting the series.

It goes back to at least the nineties.

Batman Returns, both Jurassic Park sequels, every Harry Potter sequel

So this film that shall be Bay's last, like they said about DOTM, and is taking a very different tone, like they said about DOTM, is going to be darker, like they said about DOTM, a film that was barely different from the previous two, especially the second.

Yeah, I'm really excited for an incredibly different Transformers movie.

The solution is not to make it darker or whatever, it is to hire Roberts and Barber as writers.

The Autobots and the Decepticons have painted themselves black to blend in with dark, Megatron is resurrected as Darkatron, the Decepticons plan to block out the sun to make the Earth dark and Optimus makes a speech about things being dark.

There we go, a darker movie. Awesome.

I agree with the "dark and gritty" fatigue. Even the Superman movie trailer seems to just wallow around in dark and gritty.

Don't get me wrong every now and then dark and gritty can be fun when there aren't many dark and gritty films in that category, but just because I liked a dark, more realist, gritty take on Batman that doesn't mean I want every damn action movie until the end of time to be just like Batman. What I really want at this point is for some films to get back to a fun filled action romp like the good Indiana Jones movies.

If I had to make a guess for Transformers 4 I'd say another odd juxtification of juvenile humor like dogs humping with how gory can they make the robot deaths.

I don't think it can or should get any "darker". DOTM was already a really "dark" film. It had strong themes of death, despair, and destruction. If I were to sum up each of the movies in a word, it might go something like:
    TF1: magical
    ROTF: mayhem
    DOTM: melancholy

I don't think it needs to get darker, it just needs to develop characters more deeply; make us connect with the robots again (or more so than we have at all so far). I'd much rather have the magical feeling of the first brought back, especially if this is the start of a new trilogy/storyline. Make the movies fun. And that doesn't have to mean a bunch of toilet humor (or any at all for that matter) or 2 hours of only explosions.

I don't think not having the movies dark enough is the problem. We can still have some comedy here and there, it just matters how much comedy is used and what sort of Humour it is.

If they want the right tone for these movies look at the first Iron Man movie. It's not dark and gritty, but it takes itself seriously and develops its characters well while still having some humor in the movie.

Making it darker won't help. Anyway, it didn't really help the last time they said they were going to make it darker.

    Make it smarter instead.

There was more to it than that. You have complete city wide takeover, betrayal, having the Autobots getting kicked off the planet, their temporary "deaths."

Hnn...know that I think about it a lot of stories that were dark had similar plot elements. Snape's "betrayal" in Harry Potter, Talia's betrayal in the the Dark Knight Rises. Not to mention the take over of the school and Gotham City.

That and you have a very ruthless villan like Bane, Sentinel, etc...

This seems to be the recipe on what makes a story dark.

Yes... Bay has stated that he will be using darker lense flares next time.

    So yes.. it'll be darker.

I could go for smarter. As long as these films are it would be nice to have a story I could get into instead of the story as the excuse they need to set up the next fight or explosion.
