Ive been on a metroplex high lately, im not sure how a live action version could work.

I think they could take an autobot city angle, but i dont know how well that would work in the bayverse

Yeah, an Autobot City approach would be very tricky to pull off in the Bayverse. Not to mention kind of unrealistic. Metroplex is cool but that amount of work that the CGI workers would have to do to create such a character would be insane!

I think there are some characters that just wouldn't work in the movie verse. Metroplex being one of them. Don't get me wrong, it would be very cool see Metroplex on the big screen but I just don't think he would fit in.

I figure he'd have to exist in flashbacks, or there would have to be a major gamechanger in terms of what we know about the cybertronian situation.

Problem with him would be because he's so collossal, it would be difficult to use him effectively such that he's actually relevant to the story but not a completely one-sided, overwhelming force with no tension or counterforce. And even then, you have to worry about how to relate him to the other characters in terms of the size and power difference.

And then there's the cost of animating him and making it look good.

Best case scenario for me? Maybe a flashback scene where autobots and decepticons are fighting in the ruins of a cybertronian city, and then it turns out that they weren't just "ruins" but a living cybertronian, who is still functional...

please, no more giant transformers. Devastator and to some degree the Driller were giant wastes of computer power that could've been used on something better.

He'd turn into an apartment building with a Brooklyn accent.

I mean, come on now people. Bay called the tank in the first movie "Devastator".

Yeah the huge Formers didn't translate well. Also something that big the slightest movement would be like an earthquake.

And Hasbro called a giant ICBM platform "Soundwave."

    And a crocodile "Megatron."

That really wouldn't have been much of a problem, if the name had been consistently used and he didnt end up using devastator later in the sequel.

I fail to see how those were bad iterations of those characters.

Even if they were, the occasional lack of effort on a percentage of toys Hasbro made out of hundreds of thousands, doesn't justify a complete lack of effort in adapting the Transformers franchise for film.

I think it wouldn't have been a problem if it wasn't such an iconic name. It comes across as a symptom of Bay's apathy towards the brand, and an example of why people should stop saying, "I want ______ in the next movie."

I fail to see how that was the issue you were trying to address.
That doesn't read as anything but "He named a guy something and he didn't match the last guy to be named that."

Nothing about the quality of the iteration.

It reads as, "Bay named a tank after a construction vehicle combiner. It wouldn't be a good/faithful version of the character."

Then you listed off figures you thought weren't good or faithful enough versions of their characters to excuse Bay, and I disagreed with that.

I can see it work where it is a city that is sentient but can't transform into a robot mode yet it can transform into a battle platform.

We may have to agree to disagree on this, because I honestly don't care when even the most iconic names are reused with new characterizations and different alt modes.

Actually the CGI is easy to do. They just wanted tons of moving parts on Devastator. If they made the Transformers look more smooth in their design - more like the original designs. Then we could easily get an Autobot city Transformer.

It could - and it has in multiple Transformers series. Its just that the film verse has tried to ground the Autobots as being smaller and more humanoid robots - while making the Decepticons into more animalistic robots.

Remember at one point Bay though Megatron could be a battleship Transformer for ROTF.

I don't really care either as long as it's a side-thing and not a major representation, ala the live-action movies.

Even if it was a dramatic departure, I'd be quite accepting if it was innovative like Jarvis in the Marvel movies, rather than changed for the sake of it.

If that's what you associate the name with then that's fine. I grew up on Beast Wars, so obligatory name reuse is nothing new to me. Bonecrusher can be both a bulldozer Decepticon and a buffalo Maximal.
