Maybe it gives him bumblebe vision like a real bee? Sees like a million things at once so his combat is better. He knows where everything is and every move they make.

But it really only protects his face. Its a face mask or battle mask or what ever you wanna call it.

Yep, he puts it on right before he starts being the energon out of Soundwave, and takes it off immediately after he blew off Soundwaves head.

Huh? The mask doesn't do anything to improve his abilities.

He always has his fighting abilities. He just does the really badass stuff with it down because that's when things are really dangerous and he needs the extra protection.

It's like asking "why does Iron Man fight with his mask down?".

    It gives him a boner.

    Boners mean power.
    Sorta like that movie 'Next'.

I'm gonna have to go with the idea that it gives him a battle display and combat information and protects his eyes.

    And gives him a boner.
I dunno - he'd probably be less effective without all those data displays being projected in front of his face via his mask. He'd still kick ass without the mask down, but perhaps only kick half the asscheeks. Mask down he gets all the ass.

It gives him special X-Bay vision, which lets him see the special Explosion points in all objects that makes them explode when hit

    Ooooooh, ouch!

I've only just met you, Bern, and already you amuse me with your cruelly amusing joke! :lol

Anyway, I vote for eye protection. Look closely when Ravage is clawing at him, and you'll see him drag up 'Bee's visor, trying to get at his eye underneath :D

Facetious answer: he changes his face from Happy Bee to Angry Bee, like TFA Blitzwing.

Serious answer: it serves the same purpose as Optimus Prime's faceplate, and it makes him look more insectile and bumblebee-like.

Huh? His visor doesn't change anything. When he's about to get into a big fight, he activates his visor for protection.

That's like asking "why do I only see soldiers shooting bad guys when they're wearing combat armour?". Because they put it on to do dangerous things in.

I like to think that its psychological. Bumblebee's got a pretty friendly face for a bayformer, so the insectoid, cold image is an attempt to put off his enemies.
    Also, it looks freakin' badass.

Movie Bee's face looks like he's sucking on a pacifier, so he needs to cover that so his enemies won't laugh at him.

Yes... Forest Battle Optimus prime is an exception - except he was filmed either from far away or close-up for limited amounts of time. The forest battle is chaotic for a reason + He puts on the mask when the action levels out into stuff that requires more detail/time.

The source? How about every single movie's extra features where they talk about the render time and how much time it takes to render a single frame.

Why do you think the only shots of Devastator are either from far away or close up enough so that you dont see the entire body.
