Also, since she's your little sister, she's younger than you (and you sound pretty young yourself), so the sorts of things she enjoys in movies may already differ greatly from what you, or older fans, like.

That must make every movie critic a Transformers fan then ;)

I am a fan of Transformers and more imporatantly a fan of film and film writing. ROTF, as an example, is not just a bad Transformers movie, it is a bad movie period. There are people out there that like it, but it doesn't make it any less poorly made. There are people out there that like doing crack, but it doesn't make it healthy. It's not just my opinion. The only problem that I can see is that, while everyone is entiled to there opinion, some people just need to get used to the idea that they like a bad movie.

We might get a good Transformers movie one day. But then what I think is good won't be what others think is good. Just like what we're getting now pleases some people greatly but doesn't much joy me at all.
Forget the movies and just stay home and eat popcorn. Much nicer. :p
Indeed. With all that extra movie money Hasbro can go ahead and hire more staff.

    Oh.

Something the older generation really needs to come to grips with is when we were that age, all the movies we liked were pretty bad.

I grew up on the Ninja Turtle movies. I loved them. I have fond memories watching them. But looking back, they are horrible films. At best, the original first one is just plain silly.

The real reason we'll never get a good Transformers movie is because Bay wont go away.

On this site, it should be pointed out. People outside the fandom still like them a lot.

Maybe it has more to do with Transformers being a brand for kids. Hard to satisfy both kids and adults, unless you're Disney. And unfortunately, Hasbro is not Disney.

My 2 cents - You can't make a movie to please EVERYONE. You have make one that makes the most profit. Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Returns had 100 plot holes and errors NO WAY would anyone part their lips to dog out Nolan like people do Bay. Bay makes good popcorn movies period. He is an action director, story lines are not his strong point BUT I would rather watch the ROCK or Bad Boys over "Piano" I watch movies for entertainment, I read books when I want to exercise my mind.

I get so confused when people talk about transformers like it is a deep story. IT IS A CHILDS TOYLINE about robots who have fought for centuries over a planet that seems to be smaller than a country. An advanced as they are they haven't come up with a solution other than a never ending war. I love transformers but I am real about it as well. I went into the movies expecting to see huge robots fighting each other, guess what? I got it

The reality is had anyone made the movies the way that would have made fans happy, they would have flopped. You didn't get a movie that appealed to small crowd it appealed to the masses. Bad movies don't make billions in profit

I can't afford the popcorn anymore. They must be getting it from a 3rd party company.

For the most part, I agree with this.

JJ Abrams' Star Trek is a great example of how a fanbase can go apeshit over something they consider abhorrent because it doesn't fit their interpretation of what they think Trek should be.

Movies aren't meant to interpret an entire franchise and its lore exactly 100%, they are essentially a "cliff notes" version of such. They either succeed in translating that into entertainment or they fail. I'm fine with TF 1 & 2. The 3rd one was "meh." Bottom line is I was entertained by the first 2 and not by the last one.

Thing is, it's you, and a great lot of fans at that, who doesn't really get the true potential of transformers.

So it started as a childern's toys. So what? Lord of The Rings started as stories Tolkien told his kids before bed time and it ended as one of the greatest fantasy series ever created that re-shaped the fantasy genre as we know it.

Transformers have the making of a true SF in the lines of stuff that Asimov and Clarke wrote.

The transformers are a civilisation of immortal alien robotic beings that have personalities, that have goal, that have hopes and dreams!

They had a culture, they lived their lives just like we did.

But they have been engulfed in a civil war that lasted for millions upon millions of years that destroyed their planet but continues to spread across tha galaxy.

They no longer know what is art, they don't know happines, they no longer have a cluture there is only war. War became their culture and war is everything they know. Generations are only bred and built only to die at the battlefronts. They don't kow why they are fighting a war, there is no point to it, but they still battle because it's the only thing they know, because it's their purpose. And the whole galaxy has to suffer because of a never ending war that neither of the sides can even remember why it started.

That is some hard-core science fiction/Stanley Kubrick shit right there. The fact that they transform is a gimmick, but the seeds are there. It's jsut that everybody, particulary the fans, refuses to notice it.

If you can't see the SF potential of the franchise and just want shit to blow up, good for you enjoy yourself but don't act as it's the be all end all and that Transformers can never be anything more than that.

But Bay did just that how many people after seeing the movie loved Bumbleebee and Optimus who never knew them before hand?
It changed the perception of the brand. I remember people would laugh at my collection before the movie, after the movie they wanted to buy their own. I remember having some friends over the movie. The excitement when they saw Optimus was insane. "I loved him in the movie, he was bad ass" A new generation of kids marvel and will grow up to create future stories for the masses because of the movie. The movies grew the fanbase and was a hit like it or not. We are a SMALL percentage of who went to see the films.
Combine all of the fan boards it is maybe what 5000 people? Honestly I think some folks post negative just to get attention

I never said anything about that. I may not like the movie but they brought fresh blood to the franchise which is always a good thing. Hell I became a fan because the hype over the film made me check out some shows and comic and i was all over them.

I was simply stating that Transformers in their core have ideas that can put most of the science fiction our at the moment to shame. It's an oil-well of good SF story potential but it appears that no one want to dig it up.

Sure Roberts is trying but he's only one man.

Indeed. Stuff like IDW's MTMTE has proved Transformers can be all manner of deep storytelling fare. The fact it's also making up new and interesting lore to add rather than just rehashing the old lore is also a good indicator of the potential of TF for deeper storytelling.

There are 64,000 members on this website alone. That's still tiny compared to the overall general audience of the Bay films, granted, but Transformers fans are actually one of the larger "single franchise" fandoms, especially after the films expanding the fandom dramatically.

I agree with you that the films have expanded the audience for Transformers, and that these films will play a part in inspiring future fans to create (though really, the same could be said of nearly every incarnation of the brand from G1 to Beast Wars to Armada to Animated, even if not to the same degree), but at the same time, Yggdrasil's criticisms are valid, and ones that I share. While the Bay films have been successful, and popular, I feel they failed to capture the real magic of the TF franchise (especially the latter two films): the endearing characters and universe they inhabit. That, to me, is the most important part of what made Transformers matter to me, and what I feel drove the best stories (and inspired the best work later). This isn't to say the movies haven't brought new attention to the brand, but to say that they could be even BETTER.

    Let's see,

76 year old franchise based on novels.

    vs

29 year old franchise based on toys.

I see absolutely no reason why these two aren't held in equal regard by the media.
