Great visuals, shit story. we can only hope that Decepticons will have a "bit" more character next time, or that the autobots at least get to share some of their thoughts as well in the process.

Not really, no. The only one you could really say got some attention to his internal condition was Megatron, and even that was done in a way that was somewhere between superficial and inconsistent. Beyond that, the other Decepticons are pretty one-dimensional.

The majority of the Decepticon forces are treated as monsters, there only to antagonize and in turn, be slain by the "good" robots, who received only slightly more characterization.

 

Perhaps it's part of the aging process but visual effects just don't impress me as much any more. I still love seeing the behind the scenes stuff of how they pulled something off and I can appreciate all the hours of hard work that go into movie effects, but I've got to have more than pretty.

The effects in X-Men First Class weren't Hollywood's best and some of them had a rather unfinished look to them, but since I was floored by Nazi hunting Magneto the lack of polish on the effects was a non issue in my enjoyment of the movie.

 

We'll get a good Transformers movie eventually. Within 20 years or so GCI will have advanced enough so that you can do an entire world of robots cheaply - then they will start adding more Transformers as the robot cast will be cheaper than paying actors.

 

ROTF is a bad movie and the other two aren't exactly masterpieces either, but I am surprised at all the people talking as if the G1 movie was actually a good movie, even more surprised at those who are calling it great. It can be a guilty pleasure for sure, but it is in no way good.

 

XFC works as a perfect example of how important character really is. Magneto was a brilliant force of nature, an extremely well done anti-hero and tragic villain. And I thought the Erik/Charles friendship was fabulously done for it happening in one film. Scenes moved me. When they fell apart I felt sad for them because you could see why they couldn't stay on the same side, but also how much feeling they had for one another.

I don't think it's too bad, but I agree that it wasn't really a good film overall. Prime's grand death scene is what put it into the hearts of many, I expect. I can't really call it that great due to the senseless killing of so many original G1 characters with no thought or reaction to it. You're just suddenly supposed to care about a bunch of new people and they're thrown right in your face. And even though Hot Rod is actually one of my favorite TFs (more due to season three than the movie), it's basically TF Star Wars with Hot Rod as Luke, Arcee as Leia, Springer as Han Solo and Optimus playing Obi-Wan from beyond the grave.

I didn't see the movie until a few years ago, though, so nostalgia plays no part. I'm also not the biggest Optimus Prime fan. *Shrugs*. I think it's a fun 80s movie, but not one I would call that good of a film.

 

i might have an idea for a tf movie. make it an adaptaion of fall of cybertron.

 

At the expense of yet another circular argument, I would like to point out that this idea has been proposed, and it goes along with numerous problems that would pose significant barriers to such a film being made, such as the stigma against cgi films, questionable audience investment due to a lack of live/human characters, cost, etc. etc.

 

I think great TF movie can be made if its approached with the mind set of making a great movie and not just the mindless drivel we have gotten up to now.

I truly believe that the goal of Michael Bay was not make a great movie but really to create a cash cow which they succeded in.

I would like to see another animated movie, the orignal TF movie is still one of my favorite movies other then the fact that prime dies.

A stylized animated movie ala Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance and do a 2 parter WfC/FoC and gear it towards teens and adults.

It would be a huge hit worldwide...count on it!

The TF movies, as long as Bay & Co are in charge, will have mind blowing action and special effects but will be let down by sloppy scripting, poor dialogue, weak villains and contradicting plot points.

 

We need a Unicron arc, but the way to kick that off will be tough to swallow. Airachnid?

 

Debris. Crashing on earth or floating in space or whatever. From cybertronian colonies (and ships) that were thought lost, or at least in stasis. At a rate that seems to indicate something big is happening, and at an alarming rate. And then all hell breaks loose when one of them contains a datatrack transmission of just what is reducing them to debris in the first place.

I agree, Transformers has all sorts of potential that hasn't been tapped. The assessment is pretty spot on that the production team doesn't seem so much interested in great film making as to how they can wring the most money out of the franchise.

With Beast Wars we saw the franchise could be more than just a long silly ad for toys. Some of the comic books have managed great stories and made the characters into so much more than their origin. And Beast Wars and comic books had almost no resources when you compare it to the resources that are thrown at the live action films.

But the only way to really tap the potential for story telling and characters is to have the franchise handed over to a visionary. Someone willing to take chances instead of just following the paint by numbers guide to action film making.

 

I think even Bay could have made a good (probably not great) Transformers trilogy if he believed in it. But, as everyone says, he clearly just sees it as a toy franchise that's just a way to make money. But I honestly am surprised by Spielberg. Even after the first trilogy, he still wants Bay to make TF films. You'd think if anyone could see TF as more than a way to make cash, it'd be Spielberg. Apparently not.
