Not mention how many TF fans saw the movie multiple times and probably dragged non-fan friends and family along too. That may not still be a huge amount compared to the big fish of the general population, but it's still a nice few quid in ticket sales.

This figure also doesn't account for the number of people who remembered TF from their youth and whose nostalgia influenced their decision to see the movie, but who are not active in the TF fandom. Still, I feel pretty confident saying that the active members of the fandom are pretty statistically negligible in terms of box office receipts.

    ugly, rough calculations:

TF2007: $709,709,780 global box office / $12 per ticket ~= 59,142,482 people seeing the movie

of which 64,000 TFW members are 64000/59142482 = 0.108% of the overall audience.

Note that this uses a north american figure for ticket prices, which dramatically underestimates the overall size of the audience due to lower ticket prices in other countries (ticket prices in china are roughly half this figure, for example), meaning the actual percentage of the audience who are active fan members may be much lower in reality.

Aernaroth, and quite a few other forumites here, can do better maths in a single post then I did in over a decade of school.

"Transformers: Big Dude and the Pyramid" is a much better name than Revenge of the Fallen.

So she liked Revenge of the Fallen. So did most people who saw it. Otherwise it wouldn't have made so much. There's nothing anyone can do about the general audience's barely measurable standards for films and inability to take transforming robots seriously.

We could hope for a skilled writer and a skilled director to come and make a good film that is able to make the general audience take Transformers seriously but unless Bay misplaces one of his bombs, we're going to have to wait a very, very long time for that.

There is no way you can make that assumption. Just because someone paid for it does not mean they enjoyed it.

If 100 people saw the movie and 25 like it and went three times and 75 hated that doesn't mean that an additional 50 people loved it and tied with the 75 that hated it.

The ammount of money made does not relate to quality, crack makes a lot of money every year too, more than all 3 Transformers movies combined. Does that mean crack is better that the Bayverse?

But it does if it makes more money than almost anything else ever. Especially despite "OMG wurst movie evur!!1!" word of mouth. Even every Transformer fan seeing it ten times would be a drop in the bucket compared to how many people had to have seen it how many times for it to make as much as it did.

Totally. BDATP is a way cooler acronym than ROTF that's for sure.

Myself I think ROTF is a better Transformers movie that 2007 but 2007 is a better 'movie' than ROTF but they're both very shallow and lazily written.

Myself I think DOTM might be my favourite (once you cut out most of Sam, Sam's Parents, Carly, John Malkovich & ExSector7 Staff)

I thought 2007 and DOTM had more human involvement than ROTF, so in that respect I think your little sister is talking out her arse.

Though I also don't see the huge deal with Skids and Mudflap, they werren't bad, they had some kind of character even if it was maybe a stereotype (like no transformer has ever had a stereotype character) but I'm not American so it probably looks different to US eyes.

I usually try to provide some leeway with big franchises like this because of all the fan-produced controversial opinions that spawn over all the years, but I put not mercy on these films. Or at least the first one, as I haven't gotten around to the other two yet, and have minimal desire to.

I don't know what goes on in the minds of others, but I know I myself tend to look at fandoms with a lot of sentiment, particularly in the characters, which are undoubtedly the most crucial contingency of any creative cinematic production. When the film ended and the credits scrolled, all of the expectations I had for satisfaction in this area went down the drain. Of course at the time, I was ignorant of Michael Bay's negligent filming style.

When the critics called it a loud, two-hour toy commercial, they weren't kidding, because the characterizations and concreteness just wasn't there, they were big really cool-looking alien robots that got into absolutely undecipherable battles and talked with some shallow shtick every so often. There was no personality, no interaction, virtually no individuality between any of the characters that made you give a flea's fart about what they did or thought or what the situation was. Even Optimus Prime didn't care when Jazz effing got ripped in two.

The scene in Sam's yard was brilliant, because for a brief moment we saw pure characterizing adjustment and dynamic with how the Autobots are handling their new environment, and it was "cute" and funny. If there were more scenes like that, albeit moderately, even that alone would have made the movie less horrible. All Michael Bay did was show his really cool graphics and perfectly satisfied everybody but the fanbase. The only exception to the lacking texture was maybe Bumblebee, and that's not saying much.

tl;dr, Michael Bay is all style and no substance.

By no means do I like Michael Bay's take on TF's but there was enough reference to satisfy me within the confines of his new franchise. The 2007 movie came out on my 25th birthday, and no shit, when Prime turned up and transformed at the end to take on megs, me and about 3/4 other guys in the cinema actually cheered. it was a small homage to G1 and TFTM, but to see an Optimus Prime truck voiced by Peter Cullen do that, obviously slaked my TF fanboy appetite and some other guys in the cinema... I dont like the movie verse thing, the only movie toy I own is the camaro concept bee from 2007 (it was woolworths closing down bargain).... but I accept that without being produced and directed by a G1 enthusiast/Fan, it'l never live up to what i want it to be. But I can deal with that, and just take it for a good action movie that occasionally makes a reference to make me smile.

I think the title of this thread is wrong it should be:

Why we'll never get a good Live-Action transformers movie

Because we already had an awesome animated one.

Of course, the live action thing is probably hopeless...

What we need are 2 hour animated films like Dc has done with Justice League and The Dark Knight Returns, based off of various comics series done over the last 20 years or so.

My sister may be worse. She paid for everything for the trip to the third one, so I asked her why. She said "I just like the funny guys and the humans. The rest can lick my ass."...

    AND SHE'S TEN.

I have no idea if all of these family member references are true or ppl just using them to talk out of their arse but as for my actual real life 5 year old daughter, the first thing out of her mouth when we got out of the theater was "Ohhhh, look, Ironhide" and "There's Optimus" when she saw a truck and big rig (points to her too for pointing out only LONG nose trucks for movie Optimus, yet she points out the flat nose trucks for the cartoon Op). I have a budding future fan as I have to buy two of each toy I bring home or shows up in the mail so she has her own little mini-collection going. She loves the cartoons, movies so I'm just grateful that I have a kid that genuinely wants to enjoy the franchise. She doesn't look at Skids and Mudflap as racist, she looks at them as the comedy relief they were intended to be. Adults should be so lucky...
