If I recall the first time I heard or should I say saw a pic of what was to be the movie was back in 2005 and somehow that's how I found this site... that is what got me back into transformers. I fell off during beast wars beast machines and passed on everything from then till the movie

Here in Russia I have only sketchy ideas about Transformers before the movie. I watched Beast Wars and some G1 episodes (or it was 86 'movie, I don't remember), but it was too little to "hook" me. But now I'm here :)  And many people from other non-America-Europe countries.

Honestly, I think I would have preferred to have no movies at all over the bad movies.
Sometimes it's better to dream, then to have reality.

    I'm inclined to agree.

If Transformers had languished in 'obscurity', that wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I don't require the stuff I'm into to be wildly popular to give some sort of validation.

Prior to the movies we had Alternators, Masterpieces, Classics, Comics. That was more than enough to keep me busy.

Most likely - but seeing as the teaser trailer (The Nasa one that showed nothing) came out around 29th Jun 2006... it is incredibly likely that the game was in development before the movie (Probably the original intention to release it alongside the movie)

Listen, yes if it wasn't for Bay, this fanbase and everything else wouldn't exist, that being said, it doesn't give him the right to destroy or close to it the love that we have for some characters and well "transforming" (yeeeaaah) them into something that makes us loathe them (thats right Que and Bumblebeep I'm taking to you), also the designs, Decepticons were more like Insecticons no matter who they were.

Also WFC/FOC, is not because of Bay, but was made from people who loved the original series and wanted fans and others to see how awesome the Transfomers could/should be. To me these games are better then the movies, and even though Prime has its moments it still has its share of awesomeness.

Seems like Hasbro were going in a lot of different directions at that time. Developing the movie line, animated, classics. Working with outside parties: Dreamworks, Cartoon Network, IDW, High Moon studios.

It's a bit like they were going in very bold new directions, making a substantial break from what they'd been doing up till then. But at the same time hedging their bets in case they had a flop on their hands.

I'm going to have to agree as well. With no movie there were still things like cartoons, action figures, comic books, and DVDs of some series. Might not have been a house hold word but still things to keep a fan busy.

But the movie just made me question why I ever loved Transformers in the first and made me wonder if the Decepticons had ever been cool villains or if I had just deluding myself all those years. The movies also left this bad feeling that old fans were being rejected and only the new fans would be important.

Perhaps if we didn't have the live action movies we wouldn't have been cursed with the flood of Bumblebee figures.

    Explain.
I'm still waiting for the huge benefits Transformers was supposed to get from these movies. These days there seem to be far fewer figures on shelves than before the movies (perhaps due to a glut of unsold BayFormers merchandise putting retailers off ordering much of the newer stuff, which has also tainted them wanting later non-movie lines), and they're smaller, simpler and of a lesser quality too. Not to mention figures announced and then cancelled or not released in certain countries, including America.
Apart from a few extra short-lived spurts of cash I feel BayFormers has put out a poor representation of Transformers to the wider world. It may have been 'just a kids toy' before but now it's a series of crap movies too and it's going to be far harder for the brand to shake that off. Sure the movies made a lot of ticket sales at the time, but how many of those cinema-goers will also then buy figures and stay with Transformers when there's no more movies?

I also recall all the wild claims about how a financially successful series of movies and the movie toy line would get everyone else everything they had ever wanted. That somehow Hasbro would only put Transformers profits back into Transformers so some new golden age is at hand.

Yet here we are still wondering if Generations Deluxe Blitzwing will ever be anything other than a fan dream and people can't even find a full set of the Fall of Cybertron Combaticons at retail because places worry the next line of Transformers will be another Dark of the Moon or Transformers Prime Bumblebee.

Just look at this site man. Everytime when there's a movie we get tons and tons of new member who are movie-only fans that got introduced to transformers trough the movies, and yet only a handful of those fans STAY on the site and stay in the fandom, while the rest of them either don't want to get into the franchize at large or get bored and latch onto the next big thing.

I'm pretty sure they are still doing it, most of the car sponsors were probably added incase the film flopped badly.

Despite the inaccuracies in the OP, sure, let's give this a shot.

The movies represent probably the biggest aesthetic shift we've seen since Beast Wars, while still managing to show clear influences of previous incarnations. It's objectively obvious that the films have brought more attention to the brand than it's seen in well over a decade, regardless of the subjective quality of their content.

The first film, for me, managed to really nail the relationship between Sam and Bumblebee, doing the best job of showing the attachment between a "human-insert" character and his Cybertronian friend/attache of essentially any form of the franchise. It also managed to really show the core of Bumblebee's iconic characterization in a way that I found more compelling and endearing than ever before. It's a shame to me that these are aspects that fell by the wayside in the next two films.

Another thing I felt the films did better than other forms (even though I know this is contentious) was showing the humans as active, effective participants in the defense of their world. The idea of the cybertronians being vulnerable to human technology raised the stakes and the tension, and I think was a smart move from a cinematic standpoint in order to merge the CGI cybertronians with the real-world, human actors, and practical effects. Similarly, the idea of all modern human technology being developed from reverse-engineering of cybertronian tech was something I found really novel, and I wish they'd done more with it in the following films.

At their best, the visuals of the film are sharp, clean, and easily marketed, attractive and eye-catching to general audiences, and great at showcasing the cars, military tech, and even architecture they feature.

Well, the first movie got,me into Transformers. I highly doubt I'd be here if it wasn't for the first film. Even though I have mixed feelings for the sequels, as long as I have more toylines, I'm all good here :D  as for WFC/FOC, still haven't actually played them yet (you're probably thinking "Shame on you, mandiprime!" :p , yeah, shame on me, but I definitely will eventually. Could care less for Transformers Prime.
