No. It would have to be put into his (mainly intact) body to work, and if he dies with it inside him, presumably it would be destroyed.

(Just like the '86 movie, where it is implied that if he hadn't passed the Matrix before dying, it would have died with him.)

This right here. So if Sentinel Prime had succeeded in the end and had manage to murder Optimus Prime, then the Matrix would've died within him. Even if Sentinel had managed to retrieve it from Prime's chest, the Cybertronian artifact would never work for him.

The key point of The Matrix Of Leadership is not to revive dead Transformers.

But it can be destroyed, and must be re-earned in the movies by another. Presumably the other Primes deaths caused it to die, and Sam re-earned it. So if Sentinel retrieved it, as stated by PrimesRule, it would most likely have died--with a 50% of turning to dust again.

However, if it is earned by another, like say Ultra Magnus or Rodimus, as your other thread suggested, it would likely reform.

And of course it can be passed at will, as demonstrated by Sam doing it and by Optimus' attempt to do so.

Take Optimus' head. The Matrix won't grow him a new one.

Yeah, it can only decapitate Unicron and make the Autobots take back Cybertron at the last minute with little to no explanation at all.

In the Bayverse it's more a supercharged key. It can restart machines (including robots), but that's probably all it can do.

However, it would be interesting to see a negative version of the Matrix of Leadership. A Dead Matrix or Anti-Matrix would be a nice although obvious plot device.
