DOTM highway scene, was that when the film really took off?

It's a great way to steer up the action and Steve Jablonsky's epic score made it very exhilarating. I definitely say it took off from there.

Perhaps, but never having seen The Island, it really didn't affect me. The reused scenes in ROTF were another matter.

Yep. The highway scene was indeed epic and set the film off. Before that, it was only "eh".

I'd say that yes, after the highway sequence things definitely do take off. But for that first hour, I found that it basically went five minutes on of awesomeness, five minutes off of awesomeness. More or less.

ie

5 minutes of the war on Cybertron and Sentinel/space race
5 minutes of Sam and his life
5 minutes of the Chernobyl sequence
5 minutes of job searching
5 minutes of the Autobots at the NEST base, Mearing, Aldrin, secrets revealed, etc..
5 minutes of Dylan and Carly.
5 minutes of Optimus/Ratchet on the moon and the 'Cons in Africa
5 minutes of Sam at the office

*But at least the above-mentioned five minutes of boring had something to do with the Transformers, whether it's merely Wheelie and Brains with Sam, hinting at Wang's paranoia due to Laserbeak, foreshadowing Dylan's true nature, etc.. Rarely is it ever actually pure, 100% no-Transformers all-human scenes, save for a few. There's pretty much always something Transformer-y in those human scenes.

And so on and so forth. Then the last 1.5 hours is pure

Honestly, probably not that different. I mean, yes, they wouldn't have been the exact same shots. But they still would've been "car crash shot #4" and "car crash shot with debris and smoke #21".

Granted, we actually have no idea how much the incident affected the sequence/filming. My comment above is based solely on the assumption exclusive to the reused shots. Perhaps the sequence had a lot more planned to it? Maybe they had a dramatic slow-motion shot of the car getting totalled with CG humans inside screaming planned (and cut it for obvious reasons)? Who knows?

As usual, TylerMirage is correct.

The Dreads' sequence is one of the highlights of the franchise, to me. Got me on the edge of my seat every time I saw it in the theater.

^this. Started with the great cybertron war scenes, Rosies Ass, then ended with a lengthy and worth it climax. DOTM was awesome, and this is coming from a g1 loving 29 year old.

I like DOTM, but it didn't take off for me until the highway chase. Before that scene was just more of the same and way too many human scenes. This is odd for me because it didn't bother me as much in the first two films and I don't know why.

The highway chase scene is one of the few scenes I will watch in DotM when I feel like returning to the movie. Once Sentinel turns, I'll usually switch it off.

I bought the blu-ray for the highway chase and Dread fight scenes. Those are the only ones I like to rewatch. I never want to watch it all the way through, haven't since I saw it at the theater.

Those scenes are awesome. Wish I liked the movie they were in.
