I think it says something about you. As far as I recall, Avatar was never heralded for its script, but for the amazing advances it made in CGI technology. I, too, used to think critics were full of shit, but then something happened: I grew the hell up. I started watching what were considered to be great films, and saw that they were in fact great films, but after realizing a needed an open mind. Then I went back and watched some of the films I used to think were great, and realized that, while they were enjoyable, they were not great films at all. For example, I used to think Spider-Man was the end-all-be-all of amazing movies. But then, I saw Spider-Man 2, and around then, I truly realized what differentiated a good movie from a great movie. I think the first one is still an enjoyable movie, but the second one totally kicks its ass on every level. As for Transformers, it's a guilty pleasure. The first movie is enjoyable, and fun to watch, because it's the first time we ever get to see them on the screen, yet it's a perfect movie by no means. DotM was alright, but RotF, while still having some enjoyable moments, is just there for no other reason than to say "Hey, that robot kicking that other robot's ass looked cool." |

News Credits: 10 | Honestly, my "enjoyment" of RotF has basically been the five stages of grief with an additional stage at the beginning: "I thought the movie was f**king awesome at first". But I've learned and accepted over the years that it's not as fan-diddly-tastic as I thought it was. It's one of my many guilty pleasures. But I've learned to accept it for what I consider it to be: a poorly made movie with plenty of mistakes and missed opportunities that I can still enjoy and have fun watching.

The films are fine for Autobot fans but there are Decepticon fans out there. The films rely solely on action to make them tolerable but the action is nothing but my and many others favorite characters blowing up.

And that's great that you love the movies. Really. I do too. I admit their faults, but I still enjoy them. And no one can take that away from you/us/others that enjoy it. But it goes the other way too. If you genuinely don't care for the movies, that's your choice. Each to their own and all that. Telling someone to "just enjoy the movie" is the same as someone saying "just hate poorly made things". We can tell people what to do with their opinions until we're blue in the face, but it doesn't change the fact that we're all entitled to hold opinions of varying quality on various subjects. In short: Let those who love it love it, and let those who don't continue to dislike it. If their opinions are swayed naturally, that's okay. But we shouldn't try and force others to enjoy something that they don't or to dislike something that they enjoy.

You can have your opinion, and it doesn't have to be the same one a film critic has. But what a film critic can do (and I'm assuming the film critic has an actual background in film studies, cinematography, artistic analysis, etc.) that most average movie-goers don't (or in some cases, can't do as well), is point out aspects of a film that either work or don't work, or that have implications that might not be immediately obvious, or that may be rooted in a background the reader might not be aware of. Just like how a food critic can go into what's on his plate, or how an art critic can comment on the brushwork that went into a piece, or even how an engineer can analyze a mechanical device, many movie critics can look at a film with a deeper familiarity with the medium of cinema itself. So it's one thing for a movie critic to say "I didn't like it", but completely another for that same critic to say "I thought the pacing had problems, and HERE'S WHY." And its the latter part that's worth paying attention to and discussing, not the former. ![]()

We all came together here for our love and respect for Transformers. So can't we all just get along? There's been lots of plot holes in past TF incarnations as well, not just the movies. I started rewatching G1 yesterday, and there can be a lot of confusion in that too. But I still enjoy G1 because it's Transformers. The same reason why people enjoy the movies.* Michael Bay, straight up doesn't care about delivering a decent, solid, Transformers story for the fans. He directed the films to make money by using familiar franchises, so people would want to see it. (He's going to do the same thing with TMNT)* If the series didn't go by the name of 'Transformers', I'll admit. He wouldn't be as rich, and the movies would just plain suck.* I like the films just because they're Transformers. The comic adaptation of the films are more TF fan pleasing. Because actual TF fans made the comics for enjoyment and to portray a good story we all know and love.* Even the video games of the movies are better than the actual movies.* Michael Bay would direct the lamest series in the world, if he knew it'd bring in money. So instead of worrying about other people trying to portray a good Transformers story, why don't you try to make it?.. Let's think about this for a second. If real TF fans came together and made a TF movie. It might not be as popular and moneymaking as Michael Bay's series, but it'd be the better TF plotted choice. It's follow through with nice flow and actually decent character development. Fan favorites like Shockwave, Hot Rod, and Ultra Magnus would be able to be out in and portrayed well. Instead of just cannon fodder.* The only good things that came from Michael Bay's movie series were the toy line and the character model innovations. People on YouTube portray the movie series with TF stop motion better, because they adjust the plot to what a TF fan would like. Not just somebody *going to spend their money at the theater because the previews looked cool.* Tbh, ROTF was my favorite of the three. It had the most TF involvement, even though it was Skids, Mudflap, and Bumblebee who took up the most TF screen time. It was still more TF screentime than the first one and third.* We all know that Michael Bay's series kinda sucked. And that the only reason we have any attachment to it, is because it's Transformers. But, I'm speaking for every TF fan in the world. Why don't a group of fans come together and do justice for us all and create the storyline that not only can satisfy older viewers and make up for what Michael Bay has done, but make an impression on younger viewers and generations onward. That is what we need.* ![]() "There can only be ONE Sky Commander" |
