Any emotion is tied to fans identifying with the character, indepedent of the movie. The movie itself did nothing to make the death emotional. In fact, I have a hard time thinking of how it could have been handled with any less emotion than the approach taken by DOTM.

Avengers, in a few snippets of dialog made Phil more sympathetic than the TF trilogy made Ironhide over three films. Avengers also used that death and the generated sympathy after the event. Bay, not surprisingly, completely ignored IH's death in DOTM.
