Ratchet gunned as much protoforms as Sideswipe did, if not more.

Point is, there is no solid proof Sideswipe is an excellent warrior, while there is such for Ratchet.

Ok well that's Sideswipe. He is was smaller than Ratchet. Plus Ratchet has way more fighting skill tjan Swipe and Crankcase put together. Also the only kill I ever remember him getting was a fleeing Audi R8.

Being small doesn't matter. Neither does his main kill being a coward. What does matter is his obvious efficiency in combat.

Ironhide's function was 'Weapons specialist' right?

Well going by that I suggest Heavy Duty be the new Weapons Specialist... and before you all go mad frothing at the mouth like rabid animals think about it.

Michael Bay loves his Military hardware and stuff, it would pave the way for a G.I.Joe/TF crossover film, and if we all play our cards right we can have a summer blockbuster megafilm (ala Avengers Assemble) starring Transformers, GIJoe AND Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who do an honorary stand in as Nebulans...

You know I make sense.

First off, I feel that Ironhide's death was a good shake-up. Ironhide has always been that go-to 'Bot when you need backup. The strongest one after Optimus. Kicking ass and taking names. Then, Ironhide dies. Not only does Ratchet lose a friend, but the Autobots as a whole lose a valuable asset in their big bruiser and second in command. Who's out on the front lines? Bumblebee, Sideswipe and Dino. While they are all good fighters, against someone like Megatron or Sentinel, they don't stand much of a chance. Ironhide was at least able to help drive Megatron and Starscream off in ROTF. The Autobots lack their heavy hitter. Now Ratchet is the biggest Autobot besides Optimus (who is always off doing something for the plot).

Without Ironhide, Ratchet has to step up his game. He has the most seniority amongst the Autobots and is now (likely besides the Wreckers) the strongest, and the wisest as well. So the others may look to him now for experience. Yes, Sideswipe likely becomes second in command, but Ratchet still has seniority over the Autobots. And with Ironhide gone, Ratchet is by default the new "left arm" to Optimus (Stonewall Jackson, anyone?).

If the films were ever so loving to Ratchet to do this, it would be a very good arc for Ratchet. With Ironhide gone, he has to take up more responsibility, since Ironhide isn't there to basically fight the battle, and their numbers are once again depleted. Like a junior becoming the leader of a high school as a senior with his senior friends gone. Stepping it up since there's no one to take charge.

This sounds so awesome to me. It opens up a whole new range of possibilities for character building. He can show stress and doubt and how much burden he carries with this new responsibility. Maybe even get into it with Sideswipe over seniority.

Be that as it may, Ratchet is still a more skilled and experienced fighter whose also a medical officer. Plus another thing is why should Ratchet have to fight if he's the medical officer. Besides if it were Ratchet instead of Swipe fighting Ratchet, it would've went a different way for the Dread's and especially Crankcase

The Dread fight scene wouldn't have gone any differently with Ratchet.

That scene was set up to give Ironhide some actual screen time (*gasp* *shock!*) before they offed him. It was Ironhide's badass moment that they had to give him since they were gonna kill him off. Not Sideswipe's or Ratchet's.

The fight scenes in the movies are pretty staged, in the sense that whatever the plot dictates, that's what happens. Hence why there's little consistency in characters' fighting abilities.
