With all of the action movies coming out, I was wondering if Dark of The Moon is now the benchmark of action movies. Battleship and Avengers seem to be "borrowing" ideas from it, Battleship being the most obvious, and The Avengers with its plot and the giant metal worm thing.

So is all that coincidence, or is Dotm now the benchmark for high explosive, action packed sci fi movies?

    For Battleship, it's probably intentional.

Avengers, coincidence. DoTM is not the benchmark for much of anything. It did well, but it's style works for certain movie-types, but not others.

Avengers "borrows" concepts that were unoriginal even in comics before DOTM used them.

Battleship was a deliberate use of the TF style.

DOTM is by no means a standard if only 2 films since it's release have been influenced by it.

In terms of being well-made action movies? No. Not even close. In terms of pure IN-YOUR-FACE-BOMBASTIC-EXPLOSION-PORN-ACTION- :bay  ? Maybe. As much as I like the movies, I still wouldn't consider DotM the benchmark for action/epicness. In the top five? Sure. But not the benchmark. But I honestly don't know what I'd consider the benchmark for action movies.

I dunno about benchmark. More like skidmark.
    ^ This.

I would hope that future movies would try to do better than DotM, not limit themselves by trying to just ape it.

terminator 2 judgement day is the benchmark for not only a great action film, but for emotion and storytelling. Like how we learned how skynet becomes self-aware in how judgement day would happen, and the emotional side in how conner transformed the terminator into a guardian, who would die to protect him.

I would call DOTM the benchmark of a live action transformers film, that the next transformers film has to match to be any good

Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Aliens are in no danger of being displaced as the benchmarks for action movies as a whole but it is fair to say that TF, like Jurrasic Park and T2 before it, have raised the VFX to a new level.

    I'm pretty sure
    The Leviathan
is one of those old things they dug up out of the comics. When Transformers recieves fair criticism I find that other than their presence seeming a little incongerous, things like the Driller are very low on the list of complaints.

Because CG effects are obviously the main criteria critics use to judge action movies. Not things such as "plot", "characterization" or "acting".

I think Dark of the Moon might end up as a benchmark but not in a good way.

It seems like it's going to be the film that critics go to when it comes to calling something big, loud, and stupid, but still makes money. It could remain as the number one whipping boy until something else comes out that is even more spectacle and less substance.

That's like saying, "Those type of things make me angry because they bomb twilight, but when another movie such as Nosferatu has vampires they are all over it!"

Ha ha, yes I do get a kick out of the if one film has it then you have to like all the films that have those same things. Sure Lost Boys and BloodRayne both have vampires but that doesn't make them equals.

Star Wars has aliens so I wonder if that means people can't say Battlefield Earth is a bad movie because it has space ships and aliens as well :D

It's not just about "one has a giant worm and so does another one but this new one is more awesomer!". It's about how it works in the context of the film, as a whole.

I don't think DOTM set a benchmark. I do think the franchise as a whole did though.
