It has a special place in my heart as the first disappointment. :p

Some bits are really good, but those are all the robot bits. I can kinda respect those just on the quality of the CGI work on that being the first run out. But beyond that I have no great positive feelings for it. It set the trend for the style and amount of human involvements and that's what I dislike most about these movies.
The story was simpler which I suppose could be a plus. But then I'd be judging it with the hindsight of the clutter of the other two films to follow so I dunno if that counts.
I voted in this poll the other day without posting so I can't remember what score I gave it. A four probably. It did an okay job of introducing the TF franchise to the general movie-going public, but it still had many problems that I can't overlook just because there were two other movies that followed it which could perhaps be considered worse by comparison by some people.

I believe one core reason for TF1 being the best is:

They focused on transformations much more. Blackout's at the start, Bonecrusher's on the highway, Megatron's first showing, Starscream leaping away in slow motion...all of them very focused on.

In ROTF, they became slightly lazy with a lot of them, particularly in the forest scene. I do feel that they slightly improved this in DoTM though.

What the peeps above me said. It's my favorite of the three, mainly because it isn't over the top violent and does a good job painting the story of Transformers. If the sequels had followed it's formula and just kept the bots on screen longer, I would have loved the sequels. Instead, I like them for the action scenes, and I even have issues with how over the top violent they became.

The Autobots seemed like true heros in the first movie (they didn't just try to kill kill kill, Prime seemed to have moral issues with things, Bumblebee was closer to his scout roots, Megatron, tho his design was bad, was a terror, Starscream was efficient and stuck to his aerial combat hit and run tactics, Ironhide was hardcore), in sequels it seemed like they became the Wreckers, just concerned with killing and maiming the Cons in the most horrible possible way.

Honestly, I like watching it, and then imagining what would have been if Bay had kept his composure like he did in the first. In sequels, you can tell he injected too much of his own personal take on the movies, and it heavily affected them.

It's actually only just hit me properly...why were the Autobot's even chasing and hunting Decepticons at the start of RoTF? not their style at all...

The first film is very fun and served as a very good introduction to these characters and the world.

It was the first freaking Transformers movie! I still love it! I gave it a 9 because there was too much human moments.

I do not. Its too loud and annoying for my taste. The acting and dirty jokes turn me away from it as well. I guess what im trying to say is that it was and is not my thing. Im not bashing people who like it or saying that it sucks. Please don;t attack me for having an opinion that is different from yours.

I won't but all i will say is without this don't you think TF would have died out and the franchise will be gone, at least give it credit for bringing it back. that is all ill say

I will completely disagree with that. Beast Wars really rekindled interest, and for various reasons, Beast Machines waned that interest. Then Robots in Disguise and the Unicron Trilogy, while the cartoons might not have been the greatest, but they did generate a TON of interest and toy sales. It was with that energy that Hasbro was able to generate interest to have Paramount make the movie in the first place!

God I hate this line of thinking. The movies did not save Transformers. Transformers was in no trouble of dying.

This, this, this. Thinking about what could have been is fun, but also kind of depressing.

I totally agree. I miss the days when the original projection was TFA and not the movies.

It wasn't in trouble of dying - the movies made it more mainstream.

    Ebay:
    DotM > TFTM > ROTF.

DotM was quite entertaining if you completely disregarded the plots from previous movies... which in turn made the plot decent, IMO.

TFTM gets props simply because the visuals really are something else... it launched the franchise... and like the Movieverse or not, the uber cash cows they are allow Has/Tak to do A LOT with the other related TF franchises.

Imagine if TFTM tanked... for starters Animated would've had a different cast... and who knows whether TFP would've ever been more than a thought. The game franchise(s) might also be non-existent.

No. The franchise wasn't dying in the least. All Bay did was super-charge it.

I really loved it, I thought it was very faithful to the source material. Sure a lot of it focused on the Humans but I expected that because this was introducing the Transformers to a lot of people.

The action was great, the effects on the Transformers were really good, there was one little scene in which we got to know about their personalities better, Peter Cullen was awesome back in the role, there were a few little nods to previous elements, such as the spark and there were so many wonderful and magical moments in it. The ending felt rushed, but still this is my favourite of the three, I give it a 8.

I loved that shit because to me anyway, Barricade was one of the few legitimately scary villains we've seen in TF fiction, or movies in general really.
