basically her "could" have died with the first shot but not instantly, and because it was taking a while it probably why he fired the second shot if anything to prove just how much of a bad ass mother you know what I'm gonna say he is.

Take a human for example and their heart being the spark if you will, if someone if shot in the heart they don't necesarily die instantly, it takes a while to bleed out or whatever

On the bolded part: More or less, yes. You can have characters that appear to be of similar build/strength/durability (BW Dinobot and Inferno as an example), but they take different levels of punishment for the sake of the story. Dinobot takes on the whole Predacon group; getting shot at thrown, etc., and in a dramatic situation, defeats them, but succumbs to his injuries. He dies in a dramatic blaze of glory, sacrificing himself to save the future. Inferno literally gets disintegrated by a massive energon explosion and then comes back merely charred a tad in the next episode. Why? Because Inferno was a comedic character whose death wouldn't really have made for an as-dramatic sequence as Dinobot's. Characters get shot at all the time in G1, BW, UT, etc., but they actually go down due to those hits only when it's dramatic or convenient for the story (Optimus Prime's 'Con-bowling strike in TT:TM, Hot Shot, Scattorshot, Red Alert in Cybertron, most weaponry in the live-action movies, etc.). What? Laser blasts and bullets weren't deadly until then?

And it's especially evident when a new character is introduced, and they usually show him as being super awesome and super powerful...and then they gradually get 'weaker' as the episodes go on.

To sell toys - Transformers Wiki (scroll down to 'power levels').

Long story short, it boils down to 'what does the story call for?'. Do the 'Cons need to be tough to beat in this episode? Yes? Then make 'em invincible! Do they need to be completely obliterated? Yes? Make 'em tinfoil! (Hyperbolic, yes, but that's pretty much how I see it)

Because Ironhide's death served a narrative purpose, and his survival likely wouldn't have had the same impact?

I know. That was for the op saying he had to die instantly.

    Ah, my mistake.

I think from that perspective having a visceral, seemingly painful death for Ironhide was likely meant (from a narrative perspective) to really bring the audience to hating Sentinel as much as possible. The second shot was likely meant to show deliberateness and malice, to add to this.

Well they toned down the lethality of the rust gun in the film. In the novel one shot anywhere and the TF crumbled into a pile of dust in seconds. Skids got shot in the chest and broke into two pieces, both of which crumbled, and Mudflap got shot in the head, and it still destroyed his entire body. Even Sentinel himself lasts only long enough to give his "You must see why I had to betray you." speech, when Optimus shoots him with it. In fact it was portrayed as the only way to kill Sentinel, as he was just too strong otherwise.

In the film, Ironhide takes 3 shots. Holds together for about a minute, and doesn't turn into a pile of dust so much as his torso collapsed from corrosion and his body fell apart. Sideswipe later takes a minor hit, and doesn't die at all.

IIRC Ironhide was originally a decepticon that defected to the autobots, right? (IDW comics), so maybe Sentinel was pissed at himself for making a deal with the cons and decided to just unload on the closest one?

Didn't read the movie comics so I could be and probably am horribly wrong with the allegiance thing...

I don't think he was ever technically a Decepticon, at least not in that sense. He was a member of the Cybertronian military who became disenfranchised with where things were going as the great war began (and much of the military became the Decepticons), and jumped ship to join what would become the Autobot faction.

Considering this is effing Ironhide Sentinel is trying to kill - who has survived millions of years of war and just mopped the floor with the Dreads - its pretty smart for Sentinel to fire more than once, especially considering that Ironhide was still able to move a bit, and could still talk, even while succumbing to the cosmic rust.

I completely agree with this. While I understand they wanted to show how evil Sentinel Prime and Megatron were and provoke some emotion, killing off core characters and uber fan favorites just wasn't a good idea to me. And I say that about the Autobot and the Decepticon favorites. Fans are going to be angry and some may even not be interested in going to see any more of the movies and stop buying merchandise (okay, that may be to the extreme) because of it. It just was not good thing to do in my opinion.

I guess with Ironhide not dieing in one shot was to provoke emotion. I know it really tore at me since he is one of my favorites.

I have to agree with what Chopperface and HoneyPrime just said.

So, no I don't think Ironhide should have died after Sentinel fired the first shot.

This. I know it's meant to be humourous, but this rule works quite well in real-world situations. Watch any horror movie and watch the characters not act upon this rule and then die. Or even in real life. If a snake crawls into my room and I club it with a clipboard, I'm not gonna' be satisfied until I know it's dead. IT'S A SNAKE! IN MY ROOM! I'm gonna' hit that thing until there's not a chance of it coming back.

"Yep, that shark is definitely dead now. Let's get back in the water with it."

"Boy, we sure are lucky that the mass murdering freak in our town went down with a single shot. He's definitely dead. Let's get closer to him and examine our findings."

    And this.

I am right there with ya!:(  I actually hesitated before coming to this, but I had to for some reason. Now I'm very depressed.:cry

Ironhide's death was pretty self-explanatory to me. I hated it, but really.....

Jazz on the other hand.......I'm not sure where the spark is, but it was in OP's chest, not the torso...............
