There's a difference between being psychotic, and being a noble hero. There's a ton of examples of noble heroes out there who will do everything in their power to protect the ones they love or serve. However, movieverse Optimus is not one of them. Throughout the movie he's purely a psychotic killer who cares about nothing but a body count.

so him Sacrificing him self While trying to keep sam away from Megatron
    wasn't Caring?
Or Optimus Telling Sam to Put the Cube in his Chest to Stop Megatron from getting it?

Optimus All Most Died Fighting Sentinel trying to Protect the Earth from becoming another Cybertron

Also Optimus Tried Reasoning With Sentinel more then Once! But Sentinel Wouldn't listen!
if Optimus Was so Bloodthirsty why didn't he Just Kill him right away?
He Had Good reason to want to!

Sentinel had Just Killed his Friend, Betrayed Him, and Just Brought A Whole Lot More Decepticons To earth!
But He Didn't he waited to see if he would change, and in the end he Didn't and Optimus Saw that, and did what had to be done

to Me All Optimus Ever cared about is Protecting All the Ones he Cares About!
and to Defend his New Home! this is All he Has Now! and He's Gonna Defend it with All he's Got! :)

And THIS is what it boils down to right here. THAT's what separates Optimus from the Cons.

Tell me that again when "our military" is no longer a well funded organization, but reduced to a few warriors and miscellaneous untrained patriots who have to survive by overcoming the superior numbers of merciless masses... and that their survival not only means their own existance, but also those that they care about and are responsible for keeping alive.

Believe me: when "our military" numbers a hundred and face an army of a thousand, you WILL hope that they are as strong, effective and brutal as possible because they will not have time to ask their enemies permission to kill them, and they will not take the time to make sure that they kill them as nicely and gently as possible... and the enemy will not simply grab their chest and say "Oh no- you got me!" and X's will not form over their eyes.

If you object to your handfull of heroes of going in slashing and hacking the thousand to keep themselves and you alive then not only are you suicidal, but homicidal as well because that means you are willing to risk the lives of your protectors for the sake of your ideology.

And that's exactly what Optimus did.

    Yup- that's Sentinel.

Weren't you firmly against the movieverse, Bellpeppers? What happened? You "saw the light" [presumably from a high budget explosion]?

This is so true, especially the bolded part. Our military pulls an Optimus every day they're on the battlefield, and that is the only reason we haven't been taken over by...who knows what.

Even those of us who are not in the U.S. have the same reason with their own countries.

It does not matter how you kill, but who and why. Besides, his killing was no more brutal than necessary. Noticed how in the TF movies, melee was always more powerful than gunshots?

I was against the movie designs.
I was against the lazy writing or Orci and Kurtzman.
I was and am against the presence of Don Murphy on the internet.
I was and am against the decision of Nelson's parents to start having kids.

If I was against the movieverse, then I wouldn't have all 3 movies, soundtracks or some of the toys (most of which I will liquidate).

    I even bought a 3D TV.

There's plenty to criticize and plenty to praise. I just try to be fair minded and honest with myself and others.

I consider myself a fan, not a fanboy.

Oh, and PlanckEpoch, Optimus never killed a single woman or child. Not a single fembot or hatchling. Only the full-on male soldiers.

Yeah, Cybertronians don't die that easy unless you do rip them apart.
How often in G1 did they take hits from the gunfire of the opposition and not die?

Yup, even in G1. The shooting seemed more like a distraction or to get someone to retreat. When it was the killing, it was usually melee. (Aside from TF'86, but Megs fired into a place he had hit with melee.)

DOTM sure has show how agressive Optimus Prime can be when he is angry.

I disagree, Optimus Prime from Transformers Animated is the most realistic.

Animated Prime isn't perfect and you just don't find perfect leaders in the real world perfection only exists in a fictional setting. Animated Prime has to consider his decisions because he knows he will not make the right call every single time.

Unlike all the other Primes who just automatically adapt to human culture Animated Prime finds humans to be rather strange and alien compared to Autobots. He's got the same access to information like other Primes, but information alone isn't enough to overcome that we are very different species.

Unlike the other Primes Animated Prime isn't the absolute leader of the Autobots. Even with George Washington you had several other generals who wanted the spot of top general.

Except this topic isn't about Animated Optimus... and the post was a comparison between G1 and movie Optimus- not Animated.

I don't entirely agree with the label "aggressive" for his movie persona, but I like it. The way I see it, if you're going to up the realism for a live-action film (and I know we all have our different opinions on how "realistic" these movies were), then you have to address the problem that Optimus isn't just an 80's kid's show icon, but the military commander of a faction of near-doomed good-guys fighting for their very existence across time and space. A guy like that who has survived this long in such a struggle can't afford to pull any punches. A fellow fan pointed out once that he though it cruel the way Optimus dispatched Megatron and Sentinel Prime at the end of DOTM. But all I could say is, "How else is a military commander going to deal with Adolf Hitler and Benedict Arnold?" And they WERE on the battlefield. The rule there is kill or be killed. And I don't think either of them made any move to surrender, if I remember correctly.

    Get real. *shrugs*

But see, then the argument usually goes like so:

"This isn't an '80's cartoon! This is real, like war is real!"

"But if this was a real "war", then the actions of Optimus and the Autobots would be brought into question and they would probably be court-marshalled/executed for their war-crimes (or whatever military/political mumbo-jumbo would apply)! What they did was horrible, even for war!"

"The Autobots may be like a military, but they're not an Earth-military! They would have different rules and regulations! They're an alien-robot-military force dealing with other alien-robot enemies! Earth military codes wouldn't apply to them!"

"Then why bother establishing them as a military group, if they're not really like a military?"

"Because they're a fictional group of alien robots in a war that's on an innocent planet! There are no rules in war!"

Or something. This entire issue is a vicious circle. Those who are okay with it explain their perspective, those who aren't okay with also explain their views. They both try to argue that they're right on something that is pretty much all opinion-based. The arguments literally go nowhere.

Well, again, as I keep pointing out, saying what they're doing is a war-crime is kind of taking things out of context.

First off, they have no judiciary system left [since their entire government has been wiped out], Optimus Prime is literally the last arm of the law that survived, there are no judges, no policemen, no other Primes. Therefore, He is, by definition, Judge, Jury and Executioner.

He has the authority to execute those 'Cons because he's basically the King of Cybertron, [from what I see, movieverse Cybertron was a Prime-dynasty-based monarchy] he is the last arm of the law. What he's doing is basically a simplified Martial Court [because they have absolutely zero conditions of conducting a proper martial court]. Again, judge, jury and executioner.

As for the people he executed, one was a mercy shot [which is techinically allowed in the Genebra Convention, though I might be wrong], other executed one planet-wide genocide and a "small"-scale genocide on Chicago, High Treason [if we are to take his backstory as former Lord High Protector of Cybertron at face value], murdered civilians and tried to enslave humanity. That's some four war crimes and some three crimes against human rights.

Each crime alone would be met with death penalty here.

The other is guilty of High Treason, "small"-scale genocide, participated in the same attempt of enslavement, aided the aforementioned genocidal bastard and murdered a high-ranking Autobot officer.

Same as Megatron, each crime would be met with death penalty here.

Add all up, and it's not that heinous. It might not be good or noble from a certain point of view, but calling him a psychotic Monster is seriously ignoring the issues here. His actions are anti-heroic at best.

Maybe if G1 Optimus was a little more like Movie Optimus, he wouldn't have died.

I don't see how that would have helped since Movie Optimus is EXACTLY like Movie Optimus, and yet it didn't stop him from dying as well.
