IMO no. In dotm megatron was weak and seems like he wanted to relax. Feeding cyberbirds, sitting on the memorial, sitting in the corner while everything going on.

Tony has a post on the sticky thread saying the whole movie thread will contain spoilers now. But you are right about changing the name.

Considering the fact that he says "This is my planet." (referring to Earth) while beating up Sentinel, I'd say Optimus did the right thing to hack his head.

Considering it was Bay's final TF movie, yes, his version of Megs did have to die.

It was a better idea for Prime to kill Hobotron. Are you really going to keep him alive and trust him after all he did?

Eh, not really...he could have left it more open for the fans and possibly a new director. You can finish a series without obliterating every bad guy in it.

Going by movies alone, yeah. He was a one-dimensional generic idiot bad guy, and really had no purpose going on.

Going by the novels, comics, etc., no. He was a complex character with good intentions, but he just cared nothing for humans or their planet. He had internal conflicts and could be redeemed, as the DOTM novel/comics showed us.

That character was interesting and three-dimensional and had reason to live, not the cheap knockoff from the films.

Honestly Megatron was right, what would Optimus be without him? Megatron is like Batman's Joker or Superman's Lex luthor, He always was the one villian we remembered when someone mentioned Transformers, but unlike both superheroes i mentioned, Optimus killed his arch-nemesis therfore eliminating all possibilties of more awesome battles between these two.

Whoa, whoa...The novels really protray Megs as someone who can be redeemed? The only things Megatron has ever wanted in any TF continuity is to rule Cybertron, by destroying everything in his way if necessary. I understand they had this side arc about Megs wanting to be a Prime, but does that really make him sympathetic?

DotM did a good job in my opinion of finally giving us a three dimensional look at Megatron. He's been broken, and yet he still pulls off one hell of a long con and almost wins it all, but he still ends up miserable because he had to sell out to an Autobot to win. He had Cybertron in his grasp, but not by his own hands.

That made him interesting, but it doesn't excuse his mass murder on Cybertron in the past, or the mass murder he committed on Earth with his plans, or the mass murders he would have continued to commit if he'd succeeded and humanity resisted.

    He had to go.

Yes. It drives me crazy when characters that have proven they are evil and not to be trusted are allowed to live when someone has the upper hand against them. See Optimus' hesitation in G1 when he has Megs down and asking for mercy.

Megatron had it coming to him for a long, long time. He instigated the whole civil war which, as was said, destroyed Cybertron to the point it could not sustain life forcing them to leave and now all he cares about is fixing it. If that was so, why did he start a war that destroyed it in the first place. If left alive the cycle would have ended up with Earth destroyed and the human race extinquished forever and suddenly Prime is the bad guy here?

As a person behind me said when Optimus kills him "OHHHH, payback's a bitch ain't it."
