The non-metallic crust of the earth is relatively tiny, compared to the metallic mantle and core. Its very important to keep this in mind.

There's nothing wrong with a planet having a metal surface, especially if its an "artificial" surface, like the metal skyscrapers and buildings we've erected. It could even be natural, provided the planet had enough metal in its composition. The absence of an oxidizing atmosphere would help in this situation.

The native lifeforms on cybertron are the cybertronians (transformers). They can exist in tons of different forms (just look at the forms of the various animated technological devices) on their own. As for "animals", would Ravage count as example of one? The holographs of Cybertron show that, natural or otherwise, the surface of the planet appears to be covered in metal, so that's what we go with.

There's a third option: Stars can simply "burn out", becoming large chunks of inert matter more akin to a planet than a star, albeit primarily composed of lighter elements. But this isn't really relevant to the discussion at hand.

It seems weird to us because we live on the "rusty" outside of a very chemically active planet, and metals seem like manufactured products because we have to expend effort to extract them from the rust.

In fact, most rocks are made up of metal oxides or silicon oxides. Limestone? Calcium and oxygen. Clay? Aluminum, silicon, and oxygen, with lots of water.

Since they did not show much of Cybertron or get deep into any sort of explanations it's a bit of a guess as to the nature of the planet compared to ours.

Rocky planets full of metals isn't an odd thing. If the Transformers have had a civilization for millions of years longer than us and it's a smaller planet then it's not hard to imagine that the Transformers could have covered their planet with their construction.

The question is what happened to Cybertron's sun that it can not provide some form of energy to the planet. Or just how would robotic like lifeforms evolve if organics were not there to build the early ones.

This is something I had a hard time swallowing in the Marvel continuity. Cybertron is supposed to be thoroughly and solidly metallic, all the way from its core to its surface. It is also said to be the size of Saturn. Wouldn't the gravity on such a body be unsuitable for life of any kind?

It is big, round and made of metal.

It is not Primus since Primus hasn't shown up in this continuity yet.

Why BIG - It has giant robots on it, so the gravity is supposed to hold them on the ground.

Why ROUND - You want a square planet?

Why METAL - It is stated in the movie that the Transformers AND their world are made by the Allspark, and the transformers are made of metal.

Naturally occuring gears, levers, and pulleys, of course. :)

jb3434 - We used to get into the gravity discussion a bit on Usenet. One common fantheory was that Cybertron contained a lot of empty space, with all the various chambers and passages, and was therefore lighter than a solid planet would have been. I'm not sure how well the math works out here, though. If Cybertron's gravity is close to Earth's, and its material is about as dense, it would have to be 763 parts empty space to 1 part structure. A ratio for a house is about 10 to 1, so the planet would be more of a bubble...

Maybe it's hollow...or maybe it's got a chunk of antigravity phlebotinium somewhere...or maybe it just needs to look cool. :D

Another thing I just realized. If Cybertron is indeed the size of Saturn, then Unicron is even more ridiculously huge than is generally accepted*. I said in another topic that he could bitchslap Australia out of existence. If his size is comparable to that of Saturn, then forget Australia. He could crush the Earth in the palm of his hand.

*And, as a result, all shots where he interacts with other TFs are even more ludicrously out of scale.

Sorry to pipe up about that but...astronomy/astrophysics hobbyist.

Not all stars either go nova or collapse into a neutron star or black hole. In fact, our sun won't do any of those things, it's too small.

Yeah that. White dwarf status and all.

As for Cybertron and metal...look away from our sun, towards the Kuiper belt, yes...that way. Juuuust past Mars...too far! That's Jupiter. Back a bit...yeah, there. The asteroid belt.

See all those bodies out there? There are several broad types, one of which, the M-type, are primarily composed of nickel-iron. 16 Psyche is the biggest one we know of. It's about 200 km in diameter. It's also one of the 10 most massive objects in there, containing about 1% of the belt's mass all by itself. Radar scans indicate it's almost pure metal.

So really, a planet that's got a higher proportion of metals than Earth is hardly so impossible, considering Earth has a pretty high one. When you factor in mining and building, the look of the surface is hardly unbelievable.

Me, I'm more intrigued by the terrain transforming on its own.

perhaps it was a sun that was drained by a sun harvester thus powering the allspark and creating transformers as we know them in the movie-verse. Tecnological beings may be more wide spread and diverse as hinted at in the movie continuity paving the way for more ancient beings such as quints (possibly another Allspark created race.) :2c:
