Optimus Prime dying was a great thing regardless on how sad it was |  Hasbro was going to make loads of cash off the movie in toy sales in any case but what they did was kill repeat ticket sales and traumatized a lot of kids and killed alot of other animated movie going to theaters most noteably an Animated G.I. Joe movie which ended up airing as a 5 part episode on tv and they had originally planned to kill off Duke but after the mess with Prime's death they changed it to him being in a Coma, so no it wasn't a great it it hurt thousands perhaps millions of kids, cost millions in potential movie profits and actually took several movies down with him here is a link to a sight that does a nice job describing the backlash: Transformers: The Movie (20th Anniversary Special Edition) : DVD Talk Review of the DVD Video

The only thing I can accept is Prime being damaged badly that he transfers the leadership to someone else like UltraMagnus.

I understand him needing to be out of the picture for awhile so others can carry the burden but nothing permanent. I hated the 86 movie for that. Still do. I felt like that movie killed off all toys I had at home just so I'd have my parents try and get me new ones.
Also, kill Ratchet? The poor guy barely gets a line a film now you want to off him too? Jeeze. What the 3rd film needs is more non action moments for the characters so they can get a little more fleshed out. How does Optimus take his coffee? I'd like to know. | |

This would be a great setup for Wheeljack and Hot Rod and Ultra Magnus.
Due the lack of any screen time for many of the robots, they should killed off some Autobots. Most likely Jolt, The Twins, Rachett and Prime...which would lead to new storylines and Robots |  I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass....... and I'm all out of bubble gum... | |

But yeah, I think it's a really bad idea taking him out of the picture for other bots. We don't need no stinking Rodimus for TF3! I like Rody as a character, but he's just not Prime.

There were other Primes all thoughout the history of Cybertron & the Autobots. But once Optimus showed up there could be no other Primes after him. This is one of the reasons why I hate this fandom. | |
