I agree on the 'epic' point. Cameron has a great balance that he has used to great effect in everything he's made, from 'Terminator' to, the grudgingly admitted, 'Titanic' and 'Avatar' looks promising - from what I haven't seen of it. LOL!
His 'boy and his terminator' idea and apporach would work well translated into TF as well.

Personally, it depends on what the studios want. Say for instance a few years after TF3, another Transformers movie was to be made, and they wanted it to be based on G1 ( Yes, a G1 based film). Who would be best suited for the job?

The few directors on this list that I'd actually like to see do Transformers seem unlikely to want to do Transformers. Personally, I'd be interested in seeing what Guillermo del Toro or Ryuhei Kitamura would do with it.

Out of those I'd have to hope James Cameron would get the job. He is a great action director and doesn't go overboard with silly humour. Bay is a great action director but he couldn't see a good script if it slapped him in the face and tattooed itself on his face. Spielberg has been there and done it, but again lets himself down with crap scripts... he goes from the sublime like Schindler's List to cringeworthy humour like in Jurassic Park.

I can see fans sending death threats against the director of their choice for not taking the Transformers job.

James Cameron actually has some potential.
Steven Spielberg, Well All of his movies are jawdropping.
So Steven or James could direct it.
I just hope that Bay sticks with it
