Notice I didn't say it made the most profit.

I think the reason the movie is doing so well is a combination of different things:

    1. People are hyped to see it..at this point it doesn't matter if it gets good or bad reviews. Everybody just wants to see it, since it's a sequel to a movie they liked.
    2. The amount of money movies are making gets bigger and bigger every year. Why? Because movies have now global events, are marketed like crazy, and the previously mentioned hype.
    3. Alot of people really don't have an eye for cinema, really couldn't care less. They come to be pleased in what they are looking for. In Transformers..that's probably the robots fighting (WILD GUESS! :p )...you could make a 50 page essay of why ROTF sucks as a movie, in the end it doesn't matter because people had fun, which is what they wanted. That explains why critics and the 'general' public's opinions differ so greatly.

I don't think anything is really going to change. Good movies AND bad movies will still be made..I'm not afraid good movies will fade away now studios can see that by making a shit movie people will be pleased anyway (and they will make tons of money). I'm also not convinced bad summer blockbuster movies will go away either.

The only thing I can see happening is more money be made on movies with each increasing year, and more studios marketing and hyping their movies right. It works.

A bad movie to you might not be one to someone else. I'm sure there are people out there that actually liked Batman & Robin and Speed 2. Where TF2 is WAY different is critics saw it as crap where a huge majority of people who went to see it thought it was a good movie. That is what pisses the critics off people decided to hell with you guys, I'm going to go watch some robots beat the snot out of each other.

the movie you're thinking of was called, 'The Soloist.'

I hadn't thought about it but what you said makes perfect sense. People are out of work, low on money, losing homes, worried about the future, they want to 'escape' not watch some depressing drama.

Does seem like the odds of finding that good film though are getting longer and longer.

So far this summer I skipped Wolverine and Terminator because they just looked and sounded like they would be bad.

Wasn't really very happy with Revenge of the Fallen.

Pretty sure GI Joe will be bad but I'll go just because having hundreds of GI Joe figures means you have to go see it no matter if it's good, bad, or just down right ugly.

Star Trek was okay but not even the best Trek stuff I've seen.

The only film I'd call great and I'd be willing to give the DVDs as a gift has been Up.

Unless next summer turns things around I'm getting a bad feeling Hollywood has stopped making movies for people like me.

well there's always independent and foreign films too. If you're really into movies there are good movies out there. But sadly yeah they are getting rarer and harder to find.

I must concur. The fact that the *Blank* Movie "series" continues to lumber on basically means we will never get another comedy like Airplane!, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Groundhog Day, or Raising Arizona until people just stop seeing subpar films in large numbers.

No more Schindler's List or Citizen Kanes will be coming down the pipe anytime soon.

The people have spoken, perhaps movies like The Dark Knight are going to become aberrations, smart blockbusters.

We'll see as the movie season wears on.

we'll see how well it does in the 2nd and 3rd week...

Spidey broke records upon its release but it made less $$$ than 1 and 2...
