As we all know, TF1 was 'robbed' of an Oscar in 2007, losing to Golden Compass. Reading through the posts here, some of which seem to be written by those familiar with CG, it seems TF1 lost because it lacked variety - whereas Golden Compass had talking bears, flying witches and various daemons, TF1 only had giant robots, as spectacular as they were. ROTF has significantly upped the ante. The way I see it, the following films are likely to be nominated for best visual effects this time round: Avatar - Might well win the thing, if Cameron's revolutionary 3D technology is worth the hype. 2012 - Emmerich pretty much dumped EVERY disaster movie cliche in this one . The trailer alone had floods, sinking aircraft carriers, meteorites, earthquakes ... the works. ROTF - For what we all enjoyed, even the critics. If POTC 2 & 3 could be nominated in successive years, I don't see why ROTF can't. Star Trek - Tough call. The CG itself was groundbreaking, but it did manage a balance between realism and all out fantasy. How many nominees are allowed every year?
People at the CG Society- another "hangout" of mine- has already declared AVATAR as the winner. Star Trek? Some nice work, but can't hold a candle to Transformers. I wouldn't hold my breath over 2012 either. Yep, that's what I was referring to. I can't even star to imagine what that might look like - with all the near orgasmic responses the reviewers have been gushing.
the cgi in 2012 looks horrible, yea it has a lot of stuff going on but it looks fake as hell, almost as bad as the moose on fire in "knowing"
Screw the Oscars. between "The Golden Compass" beating TF1 and the absolute travesty that was "Shakespeare in Love" beating "Saving Private Ryan" for best picture, they can blow me.
the academy awards all come down to politics. sean penn in milk beating mickey rourke int he wrester for best actor? bull.shit. avatar pretty much has the effects award in the bag though.
Wait, TF lost to 'Golden Compass'? I may not be a fan of the film, but it clearly had better effects than GC. Hell, this echoes the 'Titanic'/'Starship Troopers' debacle! A model boat!? Old school model beat out ST great effects work? - anyway, off topic.
Revenge better win or I will be so pissed off! I mean in NO way can you beat the forest battle! If Avatar wins then I will explode with anger.
Those who got a sneak preview are saying Avatar is totelly different from any film we have seen - something as revolutionary as movies with sound in the silent era.
Michael Bay did the guys at ILM a huge disservice, not only in the fact the movie was a muddied mess that critics are destroying, I don't think he knows how to properly shoot backdrops in a manner that presents the CGI in the best manner possible. That and from the sounds of it, Avatar is just going to blow everything out of the water. I'm the furthest thing from a Cameron fanboy you'll see around here, but the man has been a pioneer and pushed/tested the limits of special effects during his career.
The CGI in Transformers is great, but Cameron is a master when it comes to this sort of thing. The fact that Avatar's CGI is actually living up to the hype according to those who have seen it makes it pretty hard to believe that anything else stands a change. Then again, Forest Gump walked away with a best special effects oscar too, so who knows.
