It will prolly pull in $175 by monday. Big numbers, sure, its to be expected. But its the second weekend in open release that Hollywood watches closely. Thats when "word of mouth" starts takeing effect. And if it hasn't earned at least twice its budget by next monday, expect the budget on TF3 to be scaled down. ;)

I think that's unlikely. I enjoyed ROTF (despite it feeling haphazardly thrown together...didn't flow very well, but fun to watch), but I don't see word of mouth carrying this one to the astronomical numbers The Dark Knight hit.

I went to the 9:00 PM IMAX showing last night in a Baltimore Suburb. I met a friend there around 6:20 and I saw a lot of people come in and get turned away because the shows were sold out. We went to a local restaurant and got back to the theater @ 8:00. When we checked to see if there was a line there were already at least 150 people in line. Fortunately they let us in around 8:20. It was very clear to me that the Live Action Movie has hit the mainstream. For whatever reason the general public is very interested in this movie. The trailers looked awesome and most people expect for this movie to be fairly entertaining.

I think it failed though. I found the movie incredibly boring. The acting was either poor or dry. Leo, Alice and the Twins could have been spared. I don't think the word of mouth on this movie will be too great. If you asked me, I'd say wait until it comes out on DVD. Even my boss went out to see it last night and said he didn't care for it much. It doesn't sound like the kind of movie that a lot of people will want to go see twice. It may break records this weekend, but I will be bold enough to say that it might not make more money than the lat one simply because it wasn't as fun.

Yeah, as much as I'd love for this to make bank, word of mouth is gonna kill it. I can't endorse this movie to my friends. To TF fans, sure, but to the general populace...not so much. I didn't hate this movie, but I found myself squirming around my seat a lot towards the end. I just told a friend, that this is a good summer popcorn flick. Do not go seeing this expecting any kind of incredible story. And honestly said that if you're not into the big IMAX experience(glad I did see it on IMAX), then you can probably best save it for home DVD/Blu Ray. I know I'll enjoy it waay more at home then having to sit stationary in the theaters for 2 1/2 hours.

I don't know where this 'word of mouth' is going to sink it is coming from... While word of mouth from the fandom seems to be full of poo-poo and unrealistic expectations, there were loads of real-life humans with real opinions who loved the shit out of the movie all over the country the past 2 days.

Word of mouth is everywhere. They talked about how awesome it was for an hour on the radio this morning and people calling in basically said everything 'hated' on these forums was the best part of the movie for them. They liked the balls and the twins, the Humping was hilarious to them, Sam's Mom was jokey and funny and Prime's death was a huge blow to the audience and left people stunned with audible gasps. They loved it. It boils down to "Robots fighting and Megan Fox" that is all people need to want to see it.

I have yet to meet a single person in real life who has not been positively 'word of mouthing' this movie. And selling out like it has been adds to the word of mouth as selling out makes it NEWS so the NEWS people interview the people in line and they come out and all over the 10pm news "WOOOO! ROBOTS TRANSFORMERS IT WAS BAD ASS!"

Maybe it is just the media and people in my geographic location.

Edit: Whoops! The news story tricked me into thinking this thread was in the NEWS forum... I thought this thread might actually be a legit conversation. Silly me.

I know a lot of people who have seen it already, and they are a wide cross section of people and ages! who all liked this movie, and think that people that are finding things like "Are the Twins racist" are just those trying to find something to complain about. I see it topping $175M by Sunday easy, which is just about it's full budget

Don't forget that at some point the foreign Box office will be combined with the domestics sales and when they show the number "world wide" it will look more impressive. No wonder they open film 10 days earlier around the world!

at what rate its already behind batman.

Not to mention the numbers are speculative since in a thursday morning article they are giving you projected thursday numbers.

A good opening day does not mean the film is a good film it just means alot of people went to see a film they hoped to be good. Its the returning viewers and the referrals to see the movie that would put it in the doing well stage.
I think people will be in for a bit of a shock going forward this movie will not gross what TF1 did. If anything I bet it will fall short by alot.

Your analysis is a little off. Twice the budget is $400 million - it will take awhile to get to that mark.

I hope this movie breaks a lot more records, it deserves to.

Yeah, I hope they enjoy that big weekday take. Because psychotically obsessed fandom aside, the movie was awful, and now they have two more days of people talking about how wretched it was around the water cooler before the weekend arrives...

I haven't talked to anyone other than hardcore starry-eyed fanboys who thought the movie was actually good. Every other straight I talked to seems to think it ranged from tolerable to meh, and the critics are HATING it. It's going to be like Watchmen -- the people who wanted to see it are gonna all go out and see it the first week, and then it's going to rot in the theatres.

I actually watched the rating aggregates fall steadily yesterday as the reviews came in -- Rottentomatoes is hovering around 21%, while Metacritic has it currently pegged around 37%.

I hate to sound so gleeful about a movie that should have been a love letter to my favorite fandom, but let's face it -- there's nothing reconcilable here. Michael Bay has just taken what little was good about the first movie's tenuous interpretation of the TF universe and ground it into the dirt. It's a bad movie, and it deserves what it gets. I know I'm definitely not going to pay to see it, myself.

It might make millions more before all's said and done, but not a single dollar of that will be my fault.

How do you know it is a bad movie if you haven't actually seen it? Or are you playing that cool 'I stole the movie to impress the internet' angle?

Even though I haven't seen it yet, I really hate to see it making this much money. If this movie makes Dark Knight kind of money, it sends a message to Paramount and Michael Bay that says "Great job! Keep up the good work!", and they'll continue to make mediocre Transformers movies.

As much as people will complain, the reality of the situation is, it is what it is. There's no point on standing on a soapbox and condemning it, won't get anyone anywhere.

The studios and Hasbro have their own agenda. Let's face it, our opinions carry little weight when they find ways of milking dollar for dollar everything that comes off the brand. Especially from the younger generation. This goes for just about every company.
