I consider Transformers right up there with Batman Begins as perfect demo material for an HD setup.
Watching on a 42" Sony Grand Vega LCD tv (ISF calibrated) using a PS3 for playback. Transformers was only a tad bit sharper on Bluray than on upconverted DVD.

Batman Begins is not a perfect demo for Bluray, since they used the HD-DVD transfer as code, rather than going back to the master film. Because of this, the bitrate is far lower than what it should be, and is evident. Batman Begins is not as sharp or as detailed as it could be.

Sorry, but I'm picky on my movies.

Then you're one of the only people I have ever heard say that Batman Begins has noticeable flaws on Blu-Ray. I think it's a plus that they used the HD-DVd transfer, as it was pristine then and is just as fantastic now. You're welcome to your opinion, but I don't agree with it at all.

...Seriously?

The differences between an upscaled DVD and a proper HD format are enormous.

I presume the blu-ray has the same feature as the HD-DVD where you can have the energy/health bars of the TF's on the left hand side as you watch the movie?

If so, what happens to Barricade's energy bar after he shows up again on the highway?

I threw the regular release into my PS3 on a 40" 1080p LCD Samsung and there's a huge difference between that and the blu-ray release, like Joe said much sharper picture, the regular release didn't even come close to the quality of either the blu-ray or HD-DVD versions.

Now is it just me or does anyone else have problems using the web enable features on the blu-ray? Some reason it's telling me it cant pull it off the internet, not that it's a huge deal for me as I've already gone through them on the HD-DVD version just curious to see if it's just me.

Well, just checked it out and wow. The first thing that impressed me was the sound; it is just as good as IMAX. I like the pop up features with bits of info; I never thought it was BB that broke the Beagle rover on Mars. The colors awesome and having seen it on Blu and on an upconverter, there is a difference. The upconverter did give some nice colors, but some detail was still left out and at some points it looked like it was stretching the film to its max. Also on the BLu, you can actually see where BB's legs fly up in the air as they get blown off. Im surprised at the love for TF on Blu; when it came out on HD, most people said they would just get regular DVD.

Uh, thats your problem. Correct me if im wrong, but your 42" rear-projection LCD is native 1386 x 788 resolution, 720p, with 3:2 pulldown, it has a 1080i input, but still has a maximum resolution of 788 vertical lines of resolution. The Blu-ray is optimized at 1920 x 1080p/24fps. If you saw the movie on a larger, higher resolution display running at 24fps, you would see a huge difference between the upscaled DVD and the Blu-ray version. Im running a 52" Samsung 120hz 1080p LCD display (LNT5271F) and the difference is amazing.

As far as Batman Begins, yes they used the same VC-1 encode as the HD DVD, and although it might not be top referance material, there is nothing to complain about. Microsoft developed the VC-1 encode, and was used to optimize the low-bitrate HD DVDs, and it is very efficient, and sometimes transfers even look better than a higher bitrate AVC/MPEG2 encode. Of course the Blu-ray flagship encode is the AVC/MPEG4. But the point is, you cant always tell the quality by the encode...

And yeah, Im picky about my movies too.

DVDspot, my Blu-ray collection.

I don't know about all the technical things, but I do know that it looks gorgeous! I was watching it last night, and I was impressed at the depth and the quality of the picture. The cars shone beautifully. The colors were amazingly vibrant. But, the crappy camera moves are still crappy camera moves. That whole shaky cam thing doesn't look nearly as beautiful as the rest of the pictures. But, the rest of the movie is absolutely cool!
