In my opinion these sci-fi movies are great in their own rights and I'm cool with having Michael Bay's Transformers in that elite as well. So I congrats to all of them.

Anything for a fine Combine officer like yourself.

Strictly speaking, Star Wars is fantasy and not sci-fi, but it's almost unheard of for those definitions to be preserved. Sci-fi is now anything in the future/in space/in the present, but with super powers.

The way you said it confused some of us. I was going to have to slap you for putting Sith ahead of Empire. Now I just have to slap you for putting Sith ahead of Serenity

I love the Bayformer designs, more than I love G1 in fact (except Starscream, Jazz and Megatron), I just felt, strongly, that the script was just poor. It had flashes of brilliance and that's about it. The 2 hours plus weren't used constructively like in eg Dark Knight.

As for the list I'm assuming that they're thinking anything that has any form of scientific explanation counts as sci-fi, regardless of how small that part is - like Spiderman. Tried to explain his powers with science like DNA and bladeblablabla = science-fiction, even though that was about 1 minute of the whole movie.

That list sucks! Transformers shouldn't even be on there. I own Transformers and think it is "ok" but no way should it be in the top 30. Empire Strikes Back should be a lot higher than it is. Iron Man is awesome but I don't think of it as a sci-fi movie and certainly not number 1 either. Who voted for this list?

    rocky horror is technically sci-fi
but this seriously looks like a comic-con type list rather than a genuine list
the kind where they just have a specifically inclusive list of movies and tick off the order they like them

the script just conformed to conventional action-sci-fi-epic-summer movie aesthetics. It's the sort of thing that comes close to mocking itself for what it is, but at the same time being completely serious. kind of like giving the finger to the writing industry in an obscure way.

Just goes to show that average people can't tell what a good Sci-fi movies is, even if it bit them on the ass.

    21: The Terminator
    19: Predator
    18: Superman
    16: Alien
    13: Termintaor 2
10: The Day The Earth Stood Still
    8: The Matrix
    7: Back To The Future
    6: Aliens
    5: Return of the Jedi
    4: The Empire Strikes Back

This movies are all better then TF 2007. Hell, TF:TM 1986 is better than Bay's Transformers.

This is ....actually quite sad. I liked Transformers, but it was hardly a great film, let alone a great sf film. And 2001 isn't even on the list? Ug.

that list can't be in order. there is no way Serenity is not better than any of those movies. and Iron Man was fantastic, but it's not the best sci-fi movie ever made, that's just ridiculous.

Erm, that's a very big exagerration... I could name about 10 sci-fis that would rate much higher then Bay's action flick.

Besides, TF wasn't even much of a sci-fi. It was an action movie with sci-fi elements... with that much categorization, we could call "The Island' a sci-fi too.
