A quote from Don Glut (G1 writer)

Another message board I post on is one dedicated to old horror movies (anything between 1920's - 1970's), and Don Glut, a man who wrote many episodes of the G1 cartoon, is also a film historian who loves werewolf movies, and he posts on this board. He recently posted his opinion on Bay's movie. I don't necessarily agree with him (as I liked the movie), but I thought some people might be interested in what a G1 writer has to say.

"I know I'm waaaaayyyy in the minority, but I hated this movie (finally caught it on cable last night). (Didn't like the TV cartoons either, even though I wrote about a dozen episodes of the original series -- did it strictly for the $$$.) Watching the movie was to me like being trapped inside a video game for a couple hours. Half the time I couldn't tell what was going on, which robot was which, why characters were doing things, etc. And the robots looked to me like ambulatory metal-salvage dumps that moved way too fast considering their size. My main thought during the final battle was "Isn't this EVER going to end?!" Just an endless stream of CGI effects that looked to me like just what they were -- CGI effects. Just a lot of sensory overkill. This isn't a movie I'll be watching a second time.

I must admit that those early scenes of Megan Fox were the highlight (for me, anyway) of the movie."

Hahaha! I knew he would say something like that!

Let's see, he wrote:

  2. S.O.S. Dinobots (27 October 1984) - Writer (writer)
  3. War of the Dinobots (24 November 1984) - Writer (writer)
  4. Heavy Metal War (15 December 1984) - Writer (writer)
  5. Autobot Spike (23 September 1985) - Writer (writer)
  6. Dinobot Island I (25 September 1985) - Writer (writer)
  7. Dinobot Island II (26 September 1985) - Writer (writer)
  8. Megatron's Master Plan: Part 1 (14 October 1985) - Writer (writer)
  9. Megatron's Master Plan: Part 2 (15 October 1985) - Writer (writer)
  10. The Autobot Run (31 October 1985) - Writer (writer)
  11. Masquerade (16 December 1985) - Writer (writer)
  12. Call of the Primitives (18 November 1986) - Writer (writer)
Hmm... actually, those are not bad episodes at all. It's interesting to note that he wrote most of the dinobot-centric episodes. I wonder how good all those eps might have been if he had really liked the show?

He was also responsible for the fairly bland novelisation of The Empire Strikes Back. Never been a fan of his writing.

I greatly beg to differ. Glut was the worst writer of the entire show.

To the original poster: Any chance of giving us a direct link to said message board post?

But he didn't write City of Steel, B.O.T, Madman's Paradise, Carnage in C-Minor, or Nightmare Planet...
