That's what I think happened. I think Michael Bay saw the work, and liked it so much, that he hired Josh Nizzi as an artist.

To me it looks like a Bonecrusher body frame fused with Ironhides arm/weapon setup. I doubt the movie would have robots that looked to similar, unless Mike Bay figured out thats the easiest way to increase the number of bots to human cast.

Hasbro says to Bay: You know if you repaint some of the bots, you have cheaply have more characters in the movie! Which means more money to spend on Explosions!
