VERY interesting stuff. Cheers Mr Liege!

A couple of things of note were confirmed in this article too -

1) the transformation sequences contain considerable random movement of bodyparts designed to look 'real' as opposed to mathematically accurate repositioning of bits of engine/glovebox/cupholder etc . In other words - Lots Of Cheating...

2) the 'bots are definitely full of bits that won't fit into their alt modes but were simply put there to make 'em look good!

After all the debate over the designs and their need for a strong relationship to reality, I think this stuff is worth a mention...

But it's also worth mentioning that the kind of cheating they used in the film doesn't mean older designs would have worked fine. The new designs allow for the illusion that there is no cheating to occur; with the older designs, the illusion would not be possible, and cheating would have been apparent. With the robots composed almost entirely of car guts, and with all of the exterior components broken down as much as they are, it appears that there's a place for everything.

I don't entirely disagree. If 'older' means cartoon stylee. However it does emphasise how much of the spikey gubbins is asthetic rather than practical - you could have lessened the kibble effect somewhat without losing the 'realworld' connection.

Honestly I just dont buy it. I can understand that from day one you have been very pro movie to the new look and all but in the face of what we know now that these designs where mostly just designs chosen by MB for aesthetic reasons I dont think you can say the older styles could not of worked or worked aswell.
Thats the point about doing something no one else has seen or done before, no one thinks its possible till someone does it, so the rampant speculation about the design pro or against the old styles is baseless and with no fact. Im not saying they had to be exactly the same as the old school but they dont need to be a drastic departure to be appealing or believable either.
