As a fan of the movie, I can honestly say that many of these *revised* answers are very biased against those who don't like the way things look.

Actually, much like in the comics, the Autobots were built for *peace* and only step up to fight when Megatron and his militaristic Decepticons start their war. None of the 'bots seemed designed for war as none of them are war machines. And being scary is an opinion, to me none of the Autobots are frightening in the least. Imposing, yes, but that's more a matter of size and complexity then of design.

Q: Why are the new designs so ugly?
A: It's all opinion, but basically for those who asked this question: because it isn't G1.
|
Even people who do not like
G1 can find these radical designs unappealing. Some of these bots have radically different asthetics then what
TF Fans are used to and may be put off by it. That said, being 'ugly' is all a matter of opinion.

Q: Why is Optimus not a flat-nosed red truck?
A: Flat nosed would have made Optimus small and fat.
|
The real reason for OPs look is that they wanted to keep everyone within a certain scale, and with OP specifically, wanted to keep a similar color scheme in bot mode. The best way the movie makers figured they could do this was by making him a long nosed, flame covered Truck.

Q: Why don't the transformers look boxy like in G1?
A: Realism. Marketing. Money.
|
The boxy bot design of *every* non beast Transformer series to date has one major flaw when working with real life physics, it severely limits articulation and flexibility. There's also the added problem of the fact that in this film the bots are trying to hide the best they can and having 'giant blocky robo-limbs' sitting in their trunk and backseat would only work against them. So the movie makers obviously decided that making the bot's limbs out of actual car parts would help solve both problems.

Q: Why is Michael Bay directing this movie?
A: Because it's an action movie. He's one of the top names in action films, and his action sequences have won academy awards.
|
Because he was hand picked by Steven Spielburg to direct this one of a kind summer action blockbuster, something Bay seems to be very good at.
Quote:
Q: Why isn't (insert character) in it?
A: There wasn't room in the introductory film. There will be more in TF2 and TF3.
|
No argument here, if you want more bots then pick up the prequal comics and non-movie character toys from the toy line. (like Wreckage)
Quote:
Q: Why does Megatron have teeth?
A: Visual aesthetics. He looks more threatening, and he also is supposed to eat sparks. Can't eat a spark without incisors.
|
Actually the answer to this is simple.
MEGATRON ALWAYS HAD TEETH Quote:
Q: Why isn't Bumblebee a VW bug?
A: VW wouldn't sign on with the movie. Besides, Camaro > Beetle
|
Licensing issues with VW combined with the need to use BB in high speed chase sequences meant upgrading the 'love bug' to something with a lil more muscle. Plus the contract with GM.
Quote:
Q: Why didn't they let the fans write the script?
A: Because it would have sucked, for numerous reasons.
|
1) Only things fans could agree on was Peter Cullen, and even that's debatable. 2) Most fans only want to see
G1 concepts redone, but the vast majority of movie goers wouldn't want to see that. 3) It would have been nothing but a massive fanwank film, like most fan made projects.
Quote:
Q: Why hasn't Michael Bay been listening to the fans?
A: He has.
|
He has been listening, all the movie people have. But there are a *lot* of voices and they all say different things. No matter what advice they do decide to listen to, someone is bound to be upset by it.
Quote:
Q: Why are there more decepticons than autobots?
A: Emphasizes on how heroic and awesome the Bots are.
|
Ignoring the two 'minion' 'cons, Frenzy and Skorponok, the numbers are pretty even. With Megatron not appearing until the third act of the film, the numbers are an even five to five for much of the conflict.
Quote:
Q: Why is frenzy so ugly?
A: Because he transforms into a boombox and/or other everyday gadgets. Not much you can do with that.
|
Basically correct.

Actually, those definitions seem to cover the Transformers universe as a whole and not just the film. Hence the 'jet/tank/blaster' description for megs and the roll of 'object-former spy' for Frenzy.
