Is it cool when they make characters look unrecognizable?

I see that as something of a different situation though, since the films went out of their way in the beginning to tie him back to his G1 incarnation in terms of voice, appearance, and dialogue. If they'd gone in a radically different direction from the start, I don't think there'd be as much of the opposition you're describing.

Then again, I also remember the uproar when they showed the flames on his cab.

G1 had a Ravage who was a spy who turned into a black panther and a cassette, Beast Wars had a Ravage who... fuck. Nevermind on that one.

No, after all, freedom, sentient beings, etc, etc. I just feel it would save everyone time if people who can't accept something that's been a part of this franchise for most of its existence stopped wasting their time complaining about it.

Beast Wars was also a sequel to G1, not a new continuity.

It's perfectly fine to have a room with more than 1 guy named Mike in it.

Instead of considering new characters to be THE Optimus, or THE Ironhide or THE BB, I think it's best to consider these characters to happen to be named the same as the originals.

It's called a discussion. Not everyone is gonna love every aspect of everything, and being a discussion forum people want to talk about it.

I get the frustration. I do. But nobody will ever make everyone think like them, no matter how hard they try.

OK, then it's something that's only been a part of Transformers for about 17 years. RID Scourge was nothing like G1 Scourge. Then the following year, Aramda had most of it's cast different. Their Jetfire was no more similar to the G1 character than the Movie version was. Wheeljack was nothing like his g1 self, same with Cyclonus, Red Alert, Smokescreen and Blurr. Scavenger looked G1, but he was a freaking Autobot.

    Edit:

I understand, but every. Single. Time a new Bayformers design is revealed, people start up again, and always act as though this is something that never happened before Micheal Bay.

    Wanna discuss irony?
Here we have this topic, or you can go into the toy Forum and discuss CHUGs you buy to have that G1 collection you never had just to be brow-beat by someone who thinks the CHUG isn't G1.

    CHUG isn't G1. G1 is G1.

I doesn't bother me. I know that the name is just that and it's been just that since the beginning of the brand unless you're Optimus and Megatron.

Besides we know for fact most names are chosen after the character has been written and designed, so that's another pile to the evidence of "they were never meant to be the same one, let it go nerd" factor.

I don't get why people complain about it. It's sad that the movies aren't allowed to do their own thing... And that everyone requires they be G1

What mislabeling CHUG as G1 when it is objectively definitively not? What's the problem?

Like I say: give them original names along with their original designs. Then they aren't beholden to anything prior.

It's just as "cool" as it was during BW, RID, Unicron Trilogy, Prime, IDW, and even Animated was guilty of it in a few cases.

I don't understand why the movies get extra special scrutiny for this other series don't.

    Pretty much.

Ironhide may not look like G1 Ironhide, but I can't imagine a better name for the movie character than Ironhide. Sideswipe is the perfect name for a guy with wheel feet and arm blades. Jolt makes sense for a character with electric abilities. And so on and so on...

Nah. I didn't want a rehash. I love the alien/bug like spin that the movies have.

So yeah, it's super cool! Especially if it gives an opportunity for a fuck-up like Hot Rod to become a better character instead of "running this organization right into the fucking ground."

Because, they want to see their beloved and known recognition on the "big screen."

    " I demand originality! I don't want a rehash! No more G1!

So give me a new Optimus, a new Ironhide, and a new BB set on a new Cybertron and a new conflict between the AutoBots and Decepticons!".

    :lol

    How's that work?

Aye, and it wasn't cool before the movies when they slapped random names on random robots because lolwhogivesafuck. Having done it before isn't an excuse to keep doing it. Especially in big budget film.

Naming an AutoBot camcorder 'Lazerbeak' was a real crap move.
