A spin-off will be on a smaller scale and so would be more enjoyable

Bay's films go big: alien invasions, fate of the world, connections to Earth history, major casualties, giant ships and creatures. But of course this has caused reduced characterization for the Decepticons and increased human involvement and steps that can't be taken back and need measures to get around (Megatron's two deaths and resurrections, a whole army being wiped, Cybertron being destroyed).

So I think that the Bumblebee spin-off should be on a smaller scale, and I think that it should probably be able to tell a better story, with more focus on characters around.
It'd be like GOTG was to the main Avengers films: since that was independent and had little connections, it was a freer and more enjoyable film.

Yep. Totally fitting for the Bumblebee movie. Needs to differentiate from all the others. Same can be hopefully applied to future spinoffs.

I think a smaller scale movie would be nice and refreshing to see.

The movie try to be too big and it becomes bloated.

And that's the whole reason why spin-off exist. To tell a smaller story(standalone or not) or if it's set in the past in particular cases we could see why a character behaves like that or the reason behind his scars(let's say Lockdown)That's the whole reason for the existence of spin-offs.

I would love to see who ends directing Bumblebee The Movie which I personally dub by the way.
