If you're better at figuring it out, why not use your ears while watching the movie?

So before I catch up on the replies, here's ANOTHER example for everyone!

I think you'll all agree this one is 100% solid. Not to mention one of my favorites! I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else, though, so I figured I'd better make a post about it.

When Lockdown's crew is chasing Shane and Cade aboard the Knightship, they seem to be having a discussion amongst themselves in Cybertronian, presumably regarding their prey having become armed with lethal weaponry.

It's unclear exactly what they're saying in the lead-up to this moment, but the last little exchange they share before Cade blows them away is absolutely plain as day, lol:

    "FALL BACK!"
    "NO SHIT."

Okay, I've got to put my foot down here. Bumblebee is saying "Whatever!" not "You're an asshole!"

Firstly, it's plainly audible. Secondly, it's in the subtitles. Thirdly, it's not even censored on regular T.V. Lastly, Bumblebee would never say that to Sam.

You're not the first person I've heard of misunderstanding that line, so I get where you're coming from, but I'm hoping we can clear that up for good right now.

Nonetheless, I like your spin on the Crowbar line! That definitely works, too.

    Interesting!

Except it's Barricade's dialogue so it really wouldn't make much sense unless he was aware of Sentinel's betrayal, lol.

Speaking of which, I've always heard it as something like "Slaves is what they are!" but never bothered posting it since it's just too hard to decipher for sure so far.

    ...

Are you misunderstanding the point of the thread...?

    o_O

I think we've rather effectively proven that's not so.

By reading the subtitles the film provides for exactly that purpose, lol.

I don't even know wtf you two are arguing about, it's right there in the movie's onscreen subtitles, ffs!

That said, let's try to play nice, everyone.

    ;)

Haha, please pardon my lack of clarity in my earlier post.

I was referring to the subtitles provided onscreen in the theatrical version of the film when Optimus says "The legend exists," not the subtitles which need to be enabled by the viewer on home media. Considering all the talk of subtitles in here I fully understand your confusion on that point! My bad.

But, yeah...when Optimus is heard speaking Cybertronian on the Knightship as he's about to free Grimlock from his cage, there SHOULD be subtitles onscreen translating his gibberish into "The legend exists."

    However!

I recently watched TF:AoE on Netflix and noticed the subtitles from the theatrical and DVD/BD versions of the film are NOT present, oddly enough.

I noticed you seem to be posting from Turkey. Do you remember if his line was transcribed in subtitles in the theater? Or do you maybe have a copy of it at home which you can double-check? Perhaps that line was even dubbed instead?

    Just curious, thanks!

    :)

I checked it with subtitles from a website and yes Optimus says something like "The Legend Exists". (If the video I watched was from ripped-off from a dvd)

It's common for languages to borrow words from others when they don't have a word for things. I used to work for a Japanese owned high tech company, and sometimes when we had conference calls with Japan the language switched to Japanese. It was kind of funny listening to a Japanese conversation peppered with english words (usually technical terms or machine names).

^ Wow, I'd never really noticed that before but I think you might be right!

At first I thought you meant the line below the highway overpasses, commonly heard as "I hate you!" but then I realized you'd actually meant precisely as he's transforming, while the camera passes beneath his undercarriage.

    Good one, thanks!

    :)

Haha, yeah...but that's not really what we're talking about here.

Of course proper nouns and stuff like that are incorporated into foreign languages without analogous terminology. But what we're trying to identify here is English language subtext buried within what's supposed to be Cybertronian dialogue.

And there sure seems to be PLENTY of it!

Well, thanks. And the subtitled text for Optimus Prime's dialogue in that scene is indeed "The Legend Exists."

But the subtitles for that dialogue SHOULD appear onscreen even without the subtitles being turned on. Even people who saw the movie in theaters saw that line subtitled.

Curiously, that subtitled line seems to have been omitted for the Netflix version but fully present on DVD and Blu-Ray.

    Weird.

I've got AOE on in the background and I heard Lockdown say something sounding like "Seek quarry", followed by some other alien stuff, when he released his pack of Steeljaws.

Yesterday, I heard someone speaking a foreign language (I don't actually know what it was). At first, it kinda sounded like he was speaking some kinda mangled English, but then I realized he wasn't. I think it's the same with Cybertronian. You hear what you want to hear. It might sound like English, but it isn't, otherwise translations wouldn't be necessary. The language is meant to be understood through what translations we are given, through body language, and context.

    I always heard it as

    prime vs Bonecrusher
when bonecrusher transforms on the highway
    before barrel-assing into the bus
He says something ending in Priiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime and I've never figured out for the life of me what those other two words are

Rewatching TF:RotF for the hell of it today and I think I caught another good one!

Considering the fact that it's the first dialogue spoken by The Fallen, himself essentially the original Decepticon AND basically the sun-god inspiration for the pharoahs, it makes a LOT of sense. Plus, it's definitely Tony Todd's voice under all the sound design and he IS speaking to a bunch of humans who find him with his sun harvester.

So WHAT does he say to them?

now this topic has been brought back up,i just watched the decepticons mobilize scene(god i love that one) and when blackout says "all hail megatron" in cybetronian you can actually hear him saying megatron in the "earth" language. you have to listen closely though. it has a very heavy tone to it due to it being cybertronian language.

Actually, everything he pointed was meant to be heard or at least find later on after watching it a few times. All of these small things that the Cons say are even picked up on the movies with sub-titles.

Another one to go back and check out is in ROTF with the pyramid battle. The one Con soldier that is killed next to the puller and his head called off, says "CURSE YOU!" That same Con is also designed to slightly look like a terminator and says T-1000 on him. And later in the same battle, the Mixmaster Con that Jetfire kills, also talks and his words are picked up on sub titles.

Also, I don't remember if it's caught with sub titles but also in ROTF when Bee blows up the back of the house fighting the kitchen bots and is told to get back in the garage while SAMs mom is throwing a fit, Bee throws his hands up and says "WHAT EVER!"
