I have the 1986 movie on DVD, but was thinking about upgrading to BluRay. I just looked it up online recently. Can anyone provide any info about why it's so expensive? Is it out of print now, and how long has it been out of print? Does the price fluctuate a lot?

It seems like any copy of the animated movie in any format is pretty difficult to come by at a reasonable price now. Which is really too bad. Fingers crossed they release a 30th anniversary bluray next year.

Yeah, I noticed the DVD is expensive too, depending on where you look. Luckily, I picked up that 20 Year Anniversary version when it was first released.

I suppose it depends if you want new. I see the various UK releases of the animated TF movie secondhand on DVD in charity/discount entertainment shops and at car boot sales for sometimes as little as 50p. I always have to fight the compulsion to buy them all just to save them from their sorry fate of forever sitting on a stall. :p

I'm still holding out hope I'll come across a UK Bluray copy of the film like that for less than a fiver. A pal of mine found one that way last year for £2 and I'm still rather annoyed at the jammy git.

Yeah, I still have my Rhino DVD, but I've been holding off on getting a blu-ray copy in hopes that we get something good next year.

I have this edition. Overall it's very crisp (as to be expected) but certain sound effects are dulled to the point of being almost inaudible - specifically when Optimus shoots down Soundwave etc.

It includes deleted scenes and an episode of Beast Wars, although I cannot tell if they upped the quality

Are you guys sure the Aus version plays in Region 1 DVD and Blu Ray players? The ones I've seen on ebay are still quite pricey: you'd think this movie would be available a lot more than it is. I have the GI JOE movie, but not TF...sad!

I don't want to get too nutty paying too much for it, as I did that when I saw the Metallica documentary Some Kind of Monster go out of print...for like six months, it turned out. Then they re-released it with extras, but not before I paid the same price used for a DVD on the bay :(  Ya win some ya lose some, but do you guys think it would be wise to wait til next year?

I tried out the cheaper Korean sourced DVD on ebay and BOY was that terrible: all the menus in some asian language (I assume Korean), subtitles but you have to figure out the menus to do it, and the quality of the video was bad. Misprints on the label (TRAMSFORMERS) makes it like you just picked up a knock-off...but this is the way these things are released in other parts of the world, as I just recently realized with CDs from Argentina on ebay: the CDs are fine, but the artwork are just scans. Yet they're legit product; you just a lot less.

    Any ideas?

If they don't release an anniversary edition Blu-ray next year I'll probably just import the Australian release. It's one of my favorite movies and I'd love to have it in hi-def.

I'm really glad I have the DVDs at least.

[DERAIL]I sooo want to make boot sales a thing here. (For my fellow yanks, it's like tailgating but instead of flipping burgers and drinking beer behind your car, you sell stuff - and drink beer.) You would think it's a natural fit for a car obsessed society, especially with so many damn SUVs. The closest thing we have are flea markets where you set up a table but those are mostly all indoors. Stolen merchandise is just about the only thing that gets sold out of the back end of a car over here. [/DERAIL]

Deleted scenes? I'm not aware of any actual produced scenes that didn't make it into the final cuts, aside from what was in the original trailer.

Now, there are some extended shots, usually around a couple seconds more than what's in most versions of the film, is that what you're referring to?

I have the US Sony 20th Anniversary 2-Disc edition. It's still a good release and was better than the Rhino version, IMO. I'd love to get a Blu-Ray version but I think I'm going to wait until next year and see what happens. With the last release (the aforementioned 20th version) so long out of print and 2016 being the 30th anniversary of the TFTM, I would be shocked if Shout didn't release a special DVD/Blu Ray edition then.

I got mine from Madman Entertainment. It works on my laptop using VLC. If I ever want to watch it on my TV screen I can just plug my laptop into the TV with a HDMI cable. Madman said the format was "DVD, All Regions (PAL)" When I clicked on "PAL" I got this message:

"Madman distributes DVDs in the Australian and New Zealand regions. Our DVDs are formatted in PAL and encoded for Region 4 unless stated otherwise. Blu-Rays are encoded for Region B. You may notice that some discs are zoned Region 0 or All Regions, ensuring playability in other countries, but remember your DVD player and television must both be PAL compatible. Please refer to each individual item's page for this information and the next topic for details on region encoding.

Please note that Madman cannot accept returns for DVDs that will not play due to region incompatibility! It is the customer's responsibility to ensure they can play Region 4 discs."

My DVD player and Xbox wont play it, but my laptop can, so I am pretty happy.
