Look at the F&F franchise. All the films sucks ball until Fast Five came and the ratings and popularity just went up.

Hearing about this expanded universe makes believe Paramount picture have in mind a some kinda of reboot of the franchise with this news.

This. A reboot at this point would be pointless because these films are still profitable. And, despite the naysayers, there's too much AOE left in the open that warrants being spun-off. Prime example: The dinobots. Who are they? What were they doing? How'd the get captured? etc.

Another one is Optimus's space journey. Who might he encounter on the way? I'd go so far as to say he could run into a herald of Unicron. A brand new villain who would be the big-bad of that film.

Just because AOE left with unfinished "clutter" doesn't mean it can't be cleaned up and finished. And with rumors of a cinematic universe going into play, it's just what this franchise needs.

Yeah the whole Fast Five turnaround is rather interesting how only now people legit consider it a good series now thanks to it.

It would be a miracle if TF5 was good.

Exciting to see where they go with this expanded universe route. I wouldn't mind if they bring back Jazz, Ratchet, Soundwave, Starscream and the Constructicons and finally do JUSTICE to their character!

That doesn't necessarily mean that they're good films in the sense they have deep, well though out plots, just popular cash cow franchise films to milk with increasingly more implausible stunts involving fast cars and Vin Diesel.

Yes, it is possible the films could become genuinely good, but as long as the BayBerg are still in charge, I seriously doubt anything will actually change.

I just don't think the film franchise can turn around without some massive changes. The sort of massive changes that require a hard reboot.

For all of our love of all things Transformers the rouges gallery is pretty slim picking outside of the goon, thug, or stooge for a more powerful villain. With most of the A list already killed off and fairly easily dispatched when they were killed off it's hard to find real threats to the overpowered Autobots. Maybe Blitzwing and Astrotrain could look cool but it's hard to imagine them having more of a chance in a fight than Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, or Shockwave did. It would be like if the 60's Batman killed off the main villains leaving only the goons for Batman, Robin, and Batgirl to beat up from then on out.

The formula of the films have also gotten too stale so you'd need a way to convince the parts of the domestic market who are no longer showing up that the movie would be more than just a McGuffin hunt and kill the bad guys to end the movie. Part of what worked for Fast Five was selling it as a heist film instead of just fast cars.

More than a change in directors I think you'd need a change in producers because they seem rather hard headed and with their heels dug in over what the Transformers films can and can not do.

I think the time for redemption has passed.

AOE was the moment to turn things around. I still believe there was enough of a good concept within that movie, if in the right hands, could have made people turn around on this current franchise.
Not the entitled fans, though, who hated it from the start. But at the very least more of the critics and general media. It felt like it could have been a fresh restart without having to completely start over, which seems like something that they just don't want to do.

Not now though. I think it's good and well over. You're more likely to see Twilight redeem it's pop culture image at this point.

Your entire conceit here is that "Shit the movie didn't explain" is automatically a spinoff worthy mystery begging exploring. I'm sorry, but outside of the hardcore fandom, no one could care less about where the Dinobots came from, or who the Creators are (spoilers: they're either Quintessons or not. Neither will be mind blowing), or why the war was even a thing.

And the reason why is because none of those things have any repercussions on characters they've been made to care about. The MCU is a brilliant inter-marketing ploy because those first standalone films invested you in a character, and then they started tying them together, so now every single movie has ramifications on a cast of people who you already have stakes in. They can force you into going to see GotG by promising that it's relevant, and then get you hooked on those characters too.

Fact is, even if it's not relevant now, they can make it relevant. It's like how pointless shit becomes viral and trending all the damn time. They can turn what is essentially a mystery into an interesting story. It's been done countless times before in media. No reason to think it'll fail JUST because it's going off what's already in this franchise.

I wouldn't speak for everyone. There are people I know who are invested in these movies who aren't hardcore TF fans, whom are also big fans of Marvel movies.

I wont disagree on the MCU being brilliant with the planning of the movies, because it's something I wish the previous TF movies had. The whole "make it up as we go" remark by Kruger aggravated the shit out of me and really showcased just how much a fail the movies were in planning, which is why they might not be as good as other movies.

That said, I believe this can turn around by turning what might seem irrelevant and even boring into something creative, clever, and interesting if done right. That's the key. It has to be done just right. You just gotta keep an open mind.

There's always a chance, but it won't happen unless the franchise takes a step back and actually looks at itself, and what's preventing it from improving, instead of just doubling down on "easy" aspects it thinks lead to profitability.

Oh god...that would be depressing. :drunk

They need to actually do this. Like actually get to the root of the problem.

Except that's not at all like what the problem with the films is. Things that go viral are almost always taken out of context or are stand alone material that are maybe around for a few months before dropping off the face of the Earth - I.E. Gangham Style or Angry German Kid or that awful Friday song, you hear anything bout those viral pop culture subjects anymore?

And while a competent writer can take undeveloped plot details and make so much more out of it, all we can do is go off what's already in the franchise and if history is any indication, Kruger is a shit tier writer who doesn't even give his work enough respect to finish outlining the whole story before going straight to final drafting. Because DOTM literally handed him all the material he needed for a decent follow up film - over 200 Decepticons were still running around all over Earth and the Autobots had proven to the humans they were necessary to keep humanity protected, for better or worse.

Kruger throws every last good plot thread from DOTM's ending into the garbge by killing every single existing character off except Bumblebee and Prime. The humans all turn into alien-hating douchebags unable to distinguish the good guys from the bad because they need some idiotic resource from their bodies even though they also know how to mine the copious amounts of that shit already submerged in the polar ice caps. Oh, yeah, and all those Decepticons are now dead because the humans above all else must be the bad guys to a degree even Sector 7 never was.

There's no way this will end well, since Kruger can't write even a decent plot, and if he does somehow make a good movie for the fifth outing, it will make him look worse since, gee, why the hell couldn't have done that sooner for the past three films where there were more characters and the humans weren't utterly hypocritical bastards?

The last time Goldsman was put in charge of writing a money making franchise, he killed Batman.

Yes, if done right, the movies could be good. But what Paramount keeps doing ensures that will never happen.

Eh... They've killed off all the primary Decepticons (way too easily). The only Decepticons left to introduce that would be a credible threat left to introduce would be Cyclonus, Scourge, Trypticon and the Combaticons, and even then, they'd be without Brawl.
In my honest opinion, they should have left it done with Dark of the Moon, like was originally planned. There's literally nowhere especially interesting to go from here, unless they plan on bringing in Unicron and maybe the Predacons. Michael Bay and Ehren Kruger have written/directed themselves into a corner.
Maybe if the writing somehow improves (which is very doubtful), we'll be treated to some more interesting Decepticons. However, every time I see how they were gotten right, I will be reminded about how they wasted the potential of Megatron, Starscream, Shockwave, and Soundwave. (Megatron is commanded by no one, Starscream should have shown more treachery and cunning, Soundwave should have put up more of a fight before Bumblebee killed him, and Shockwave should have been given a character and put up MUCH more of a fight before Optimus killed him.)

Oh well... I guess that means more movie-verse toys. I do like those...

I think Paramount Picture decision to the expanded universe may be their strategy of rebooting the franchise. We haven't heard anything significant about TF5. I remember the same situation about TASM2. After the film was released, the producers said they had some great idea about the sequel, and then poof! : They rebooted the whole thing.

You do realize that between the talking about the sequel and then the talking about the reboot, there was a little thing about the rights being sold back to Marvel/Disney, right?

Not to mention given how some people really were angered by TSAM2, a reboot is welcome news to them.

Yeah if the Decepticon didn't die so anticlimatically and were just robot monsters...we'd probably have it better.
