It's a relic of an earlier draft of the script I believe - initial draft had him taking something else as a trophy, in the final cut, it's the Spark.

I do like the theory of "take the Spark to prove the kill" though - that is a very well-reasoned and logical conclusion.

It's sad that not even the writers put this much thought into the movie.

Well whether they did it on purpose or not, they did leave it open for him to be brought back with a new body in one of the future movies. They may do it, and they may not. I'm fairly sure when they killed off Megatron in DOTM they really meant to make sure the viewer knew he was dead as hell, yet the idea of Galvatron and the new bad-guy having that evil essence of Megatron was important enough to write in a reason for there to still be some kind of life left in his split open and bashed in severed head in AoE.
The writers are just going to do whatever they can get away with to take the story where they want it to go, and Lockdown keeping that spark left another easy door open.

In my opinion Ratchet was almost exactly a Phil Coulson because neither had all that much bigger a part in their movies from each other, and both have been much more important characters in a TV show (a few in ratchet's case, though different incarnations). I'd say ratchet is one of the top 3 or 4 known Autobots, and not just in the movies.

 

A Trophy, he probably had a collection of sparks in a part of his ship.

Would of been awesome if Bay made a scene showing lockodwn putting Ratchets spark with a bunch of others.

 

Sounds okay, but there's no Ratchet. So, no.  

 

Sadly, Ratchet is pushing up rebar somewhere.

Just it would be fun to see more of running around Lockdown's ship just bigger and more epic in another movie. It would be all CGI of course, but for the amount of money these movies have made they can afford it.

 

Probably took it to imprison his spark in a fish tank. A fate worse than death
