    Nitpicks are only noticed because people aren't invested. Robert Rodriguez has a great quote in which he points out the inconsistent lighting in El Mariachi, and explains his thought process as "If they notice, I've lost them anyway."

    Reminds me of a saying I have: "If a movie manages to entertain me enough to gloss over some of the glaring problems in the story, then it's done its job."

    I mean, 'Up" is a film whose emotional subplot between Carl and Ellie makes many gloss over the age issue regarding Charles Muntz, let alone the talking dogs.

    Yep. Movies are illusions. At some point an illusion breaks down. But a good story is engaging enough that you don't notice the seams unless you're looking for them.
