For all of those who've seen the '86 movie, what was your initial reaction to the massacre in the shuttle. Where we see the brutal deaths of four beloved characters.  

 

Did people really think they died? I mean, they got shot tons of times in the past, and the animation was notably improved so I just came to figure that was all it was. It didn't really feel like that was 'it' for them until the season 3 episode that confirmed it. Prime and Starscream were the only ones that died in the movie for me when I first saw it.

 

Well, there was probably no mistaking that Ironhide was dead.

 

Well it was probably shit like a close-up of Brawn's innards exploding, fire spewing out of Prowl's face and Megatron callously executing Ironhide that tipped us off to the fact that, no, this wasn't cute cartoon violence anymore, this was straight-up HOLY SHIT THEY KILLED THOSE GUYS.

 

I don't think anyone saw that shit coming. I know I was expecting them to get repaired and get back up and fighting, but when Optimus died, that just brought the whole thing home: death was real now in Transformers. The stakes were different. That was a massive shift in tone for the franchise.

 

Total shock. Nothing could have prepared my seven year old brain for what I was about to see when I walked in that theater 28 years ago. The deaths, the score, the metal tunes, the new characters, the epic space adventure, the scope, the swearing... everything about it blew me away and made a deep, lasting impression.

 

Yeah, it was clear they were sending away the old guard for the new. They weren't repaired and brought back into things where as the debuting Kup and Ultra Magnus (later on Springer) survived dismantlement of their own.

 

I'm not a G1ner, bayformers got me into the G1 series (which I love btw) and when I watched the movie I didn't expect any of that! I was shocked and had a small grudge on the new characters haha! But yeah, I didn't cry or anything because I didn't grow up with the series unfortunately.

Oh, and when I first watched the series I was expecting characters to die.....but sort of gold they didn't   (then the movie came :'( )

Seriously though, I can't massively remember, but I suspect I was all like 'Yeah! Go Decepticons!' cos, y'know, 'Con's f'rever.

 

I didn't really think much of it but that's because when I first saw the 86 film I didn't know who G1 Ironhide, Ratchet, Prowl and Brawn were so their deaths didn't really have an impact other than me thinking this movie was hardcore.

 

My reaction to the massacre in the Shuttle was like        

 

I can't imagine my reaction was that much different than this (but then, I never saw it at the theater). I didn't care about who died until they got to Optimus. That one got to me.

When Starscream's turn came that was complete fist-pump. I distinctly remember feeling he had that coming.

 

I didn't realize they were being killed. I thought they were just being capture

 

The shuttle scene did show the Con's at there best. So I was 50/50

One scene I wish they showed in the movie was the gauntlet scene where even in Autobot city.

 

I was surprised at the shuttle scene but I was more cut up by Starscream's death at the time, he was always my favorite.

 

the only one i cared about was wheeljack, and he was retconed back to life in victory  

 

Having seen quite a few of the G2 run of the series it was pretty much a sucker punch to little me. I remember being especially bothered by Prowls death since at the time he had been a favorite. Then seeing Wheeljack and Windcharger's corpses didn't help much.
