Toy is gray. Cartoon is purple. ;)

In all serious I really enjoy his animation colors much more than his toy colors.

    I'd have to say purple.

You have to remember, most reincarnations of Galvatron are purple, and there was even a version of G1 Galvatron released in a nice looking lavender. The only Galvatron I can't say is purple/lavender is the current Movie version, and... the original toy.

Grey for me. Comic and original toy version. Always preferred the grey to the purple. Made him more Megatron-y. And the Marvel UK Target: 2006 artwork cemented that colour for me.

I wonder when he went purple? Presumably he was grey originally in movie concept art or the toy would have been purple too. Unless for some reason the toy was changed to grey somewhere down the line during design to perhaps evoke Megatron more.

    Hmm... which came first?

Purple. Besides being better looking, he was a product of the cartoon.

With this thread in mind I went noodling around the internet looking for colour concept art for the movie and came across this rather interesting read about the various versions of Galvatron:

    ()The Mechanical Maniacs

I couldn't find any really early concept art of Galvatron by Floro Dery that was in any proper colour apart from a vague pastel pink (although a lot of the character art seems to be like that so perhaps don't read too much into it), but there is a suggestion that Dery didn't determine the colours and that decision was up to 'the powers that be' (I saw this mentioned on another site too). Dunno if 'tptb' refers to the movie designers or Hasbro's toy designers. Or why the movie was purple and the toy grey.

Scroll down for the concept art of Galvatron:

G1 Concept Art by Floro Dery (Image Heavy) - Transformers

Perhaps. But was he grey to begin with in the movie production and later changed to purple or was he always purple? I'm mostly interested in what the original intention for his colour was rather than how it ended up on screen.

Normally I'd say toys of movies would be movie first and toys second, but of course Hasbro and Transformers has always been a bit difficult with regard to whether toys or media lead.

I like him better as purple and think he's more iconic that way. If he's a separate character from Megatron it lets him stand out that much more. Plus I hate the idea of all the Decepticons getting grayified or having significantly more bland colors than the Autobots. COLOR, DANGIT, COLOR!

I prefer the G1 cartoon over the G1 comics in nearly all cases, and Galvatron is no exception.

    So, purple.

Depends on the colour for Megatron.

If Megatron is rocking the white/silver colours then I prefer Galvatron to be purple to better seperate the two.

If Megatron is more dark-gray then I like Galvatron as shining silver to feel more like a shinier updated version of him.

They began to develop his toy before his character model was finalized, so his toy was loosely based on Floro Dery's early concept art, including that grey color scheme.
