What do you guys think? Do you think the planet eater overstayed his welcome, or do you think his chaos bringing self gets all the praise he deserves?

Oh god yes. He's one of the problems with escalating threats in Transformers. There is no threat greater than Unicron because he's a planetary (and therefore subsequently galactic) threat. The sense of scale is so skewed it's impossible to feel especially worried about the outcome of...anything, given the cosmic nature of Unicron means he's unstoppably capable of wrecking everything. Now, if it's more like Aligned where Unicron doesn't even appear for bajillions of years, that's cool, but when he does appear, I need it to also be something similar to Prime's first outing: where his threat level is clearly not the absolute top end threat despite him being a cosmic being, and where he can be defeated by somewhat conventional means.

I think the problem people have with him is that he's always the final boss and there isn't much done with his character aside from being Robot Satan.

His presence in the franchise opens the door for all sorts of mystical stuff that detracts from the more sci-fi elements I prefer. Prime put a lot of focus on ancient artifacts, as did the movies; I just don't really like robot magic.

Unicron as a concept is, however, awesomely silly. I can't stay mad at him forever.

    A bit.

His movie debut and marvel US appearances created some awesome battles but didn't give the character too much interesting depth really.

The Unicron trilogy really robbed most of the life and threat out of him by overusing him.

In the UK marvel comic run he was pretty interesting and he was actually pretty clever

I really liked him as the centre of earth in prime as it was really unexpected, gave a legit reason for them fighting over earth and I was hoping they was going to go down the route of them not being able to truly kill unicron as it would destroy the earth

I don't really think he was. I did like Unicron a lot, but they did him overuse a bit.

No, Unicron is not overrated. In g1 he was underscaled (or seemed to scale jump a lot) but story, character and design wise he was awesome.

I always thought it was cool to have his head as one of Cybertron's moons. Great writing.

I like the mysticism he adds to my giant robots. I never want him to say he is a god but I don't want him to ever deny or disprove it.

No only one thing in the universe could kill him that made him immortal, even after that he still was alive.

I'm forgetting but did they ever actually kill him completely?

No. It's Unicron. It's a Transformer that is the size of a planet! (or a moon.)

    It's just cool. Period.

    It's not. It's lazy.

It's making a character who's only merit is his physical size. He's just a lazy devil-like character invented because creating a real threatening villain on the merits of his character was too hard.

Unicron just used magic powers and his ridiculous size and accomplished nothing as a result. He was a Death Star ripoff that somehow caught on because nostalgia.

Or you know, some people just like him. I've always loved the impending threat and fear that Unicron brings to characters before he even gets there. My favorite incarnation is Unicron from Transformers Prime, due to the fact that he had the most character out of any other incarnation. While I do love the character, I agree that he's used too much as the final big bad and should be used sparingly. Is he overrated? Not to me no. He's a planet-sized Transformer that is essentially death incarnate of the Transformer universe, and I like that aspect a lot.

    Overrated? No. Overexposed? Hell yes.

My older brother constantly makes fun of me for still collecting transformers, but the one thing he will always say is how cool Unicron is. Granted, I think some of that is rose colored because he saw Transformers in theaters back in 86.

I think a lot of people that found transformers through Armada and Energon might think of Unicron less favorably, but before that, people thought Unicron was top dog.

Personally, I can see both sides of the argument, but I'll always think of Unicron as an awesome character.

Saying he's a lazy villain isn't really fair though. Megatron was just as lazy in the original cartoon. Besides that, he wasn't really robot satan in the movie. That didn't happen until the comics. Pretty much everything about Unicron now is taken directly from the comic version of the character. I wouldn't even say he cought on because of nostalgia, either. Honestly, how many times has he actually been used since G1? He's probably one of the least used popular characters.

Honestly, he really isn't that overexposed either. He was overexposed when they used him twice in a row, for Armada and Energon. Really, the only reason people think he's overexposed is because we all keep talking about the character.

Yeah, I'm kind of sick of him. Never thought that would be the case with a giant evil viking robot that transforms, but here we are.

Unicron is novel when used only sparingly. Turning him into a physical god kind of gets in the way of that.

Armada, Energon, Prime. He's been used more over the last ten years than any other time in Transformers history. Digging him out for Armada was pretty novel, but everything after that it's like "oh, it's Unicron" and the impact is kind of lost.

The worst of it is none of his appearances following the 86 movie tops the imagery of Unicron slamming his big hand down on Cybertron.
