I am curious to know, is the iconic G1 look of Megatron outdated aesthetically?

Most of the G1 designs are outdated, so that is why they modernize the designs constantly to keep them fresh.

As for Megatron, he's still a cool, bad ass robot with a big cannon that's powered by a dying star, and his design from G1 stands the test of time even put next to his other versions.

Nah, I think he's still worthwhile.

Gun mode needed to be changed, but aside from the aesthetic changes that occur, his overall design is still good.

"Outdated" is a bit of a weird concept with robots, especially since technically just about any fictional robots will be way ahead of what we can actually achieve yet. And often times shows/movies/etc., such as Futurama, will purposely go with an antiquated style of robot just because. It also doesn't help that Western and Eastern media take very different approaches to robots, further diluting the view of "what a robot should be".

I think it's safe to say that the blocky, not obviously mechanical-looking aesthetic the G1 bots had is rather dated. The "modern" robot tends to be much more streamlined, almost organic, often with some exposed (if only temporarily or seen thru a clear covering) wires and gears and such. 'Course they boxy look can still be used, but it'll be conspicuously 'not-modern'. Which isn't a bad thing.

G1 Meg's general design -- the vaguely Nazi-esque "bucket" helmet, the arm cannon, the color scheme, etc. -- I don't think those would ever become "outdated", just perpetually modernized/updated.

In terms of a gun alt-mode? Possibly, but we've seen iconic parts of that original design recycled into so many great updates that I don't think it's an "outdated" one, at least not in the way you seem to be describing.

I mean, in a lot of ways you could argue most of the G1 bots have "outdated" designs, especially from a toy perspective, but that isn't to say there aren't aspects IN those designs that can't be carried forward and made to work in a recognizable, but "modern" or "current" fashion. Hell, we see that on a regular basis.

I kinda like his G1 design. What's really outdated is that gun alt-mode.

Yep here in 2013 guns have gone the way of 8-tracks. We never see guns anywhere. Know what is really outdated. Transformers that turn into cars with wheels. What the hell is this, the 1950s? Get with the times! :D

G1 Megs isn't outdated, and I pretty much like his gun mode. However, he could turn into a turret like Galvatron if he ever needs to be updated.

Probably my favorite design ever.. But being that I am a gi joe fan I would love to see him done in an uber realistic style like my custom. Like the tin man with a bad tude.

Only from a toy/societal point of view. Kids playing with guns isnt viewed the same way it was in the 70/80s........unless youre in the NRA.

I'd go with the general consensus and say that while his overall design is hardly outdated, since the silver bulky tyrant with the bucket head and the bigass gun concept has remained fairly intact through the years (TFP Megs is pretty much a sleelker spikier jet version), the gun alt-mode is kinda laughable nowadays :lol

No. Don't like his gunmode, but his robot look is iconic and still holds up. :)

Outdated? Yes. All of the G1 designs outdated? Yes.

I like the advancements in designs with TFP and the movies. They give the characters unique designs, which adds personality to the character. They're not a bunch of colored blocks anymore, and I prefer that. (Come at me Geewuners)

I don't think there is much of a space for mass-shifting hand-size alt modes in the franchise anymore.

Even the casettes now are "DATA DISKS" for the sake of being less odd to modern audiences. And I think I'm fine with that honestly.
