There were actually some G1 connections made during Season 1. Specifically (spoiler tagged for those first-time watchers).

I'd put it this way, Prime has better draftsmanship, the Beast Era has better animation. It don't fully capture the difference, but gets to the heart of the matter I think.

Especially since, well, G1 looks like shit and everybody watches it.

Beast Wars is an old show. It's going to look like an old show.

For Beast wars newbies, start out with the first episode, then watch the last 3 to 4 episodes of season 1. From season 2 on it gets to be more fast paced and there are fewer filler episodes, plus once they go Transmetal, they feel more like traditional transformers. You can go back and watch the rest of season one later, basically the series starts out slow, takes a little time to find it's character's place and personality, but once it does it's great.
I still think the battles are more satisfying and the characters better balanced than prime.
