Whats your favorite G1 universe. For me its the cartoon because well i like the G1 cartoon a lot. Plus the other continuities all have problems.

Marvel- Optimus killed himself
Dreamwave- never read.
IDW- to many mini series and can't get a sense of what happens when
Japanese g1 cartoon- haven't seen enough
Marvel UK- haven't read enough

Its not as if its hard to find.

I say Marvel UK is my favorite even though its not the best. I'd say the IDW universe overall would be the best, even though it has some of the worst issues of all the Transformers comics.

The Sunbow toon. It has plotholes but I generally like the feel of it.
Check out my GI Joe and Marvel Legends sales!

The cartoon, because it has had a bigger impact on our franchise than anything else.

For me it's still the Sunbow cartoon despite all its problems. The thing is, every take on the G1 universe is rife with problems, so it's not like the wacky elements like Kremzeek or the cringe-worthy stuff like "Carnage in C-Minor" instantly takes it off the list.

The Marvel comics didn't do it for me, from what I've read.
The UK Marvel comics also didn't do much for me.
Dreamwave's stuff suffered from a long, boring start and the house art style.
IDW suffers from constant reboots, the Costa era, All Hail Megatron, and numerous missteps.
The Japanese cartoons are a good example of how a different culture approaches the half-hour cartoon format. For me, the japanese toons always suffered from long, drawn out arcs that felt like the plot was just barely crawling forward.

A lot of what makes G1 for me are the voices, the music, and the bright, colorful characters and backgrounds that fill the show. A ton of the secondary characters were pretty forgettable in the voice department, but the core cast of Optimus, Bumblebee, Jazz, Ironhide, Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, etc. all had some of the most memorable voices ever.
And the music- one of my favorite pieces is still the end-credits theme without any lyrics. But for all the threads we have here about what piece of music people like best from TFTM, I'm surprised we don't have as much interest devoted to the score from the shows.

The cartoon for me, the Marvel comics come in right behind it.

Sunbow by a million miles.

The Japanese cartoons are entertaining as their own thing, but they are essentially different characters the way they were written.

The US Marvel comics had their moments, but for about 60 of their 80 issues were dry as dirt. And except for the very little bit drawn by Geoff Senior, the art was completely unsuited to the property, throughout.

The UK comics were much better, but still not quite the show/movie, imo.

IDW and Dreamwave aren't G1. They are homages to G1.
