When I was a kid, my older brother had G1 Ironhide and Broadside.
I used to think Broadside was Starscream.
Mostly because Ironhide looked nothing like his cartoon self, but I was able to recognize the vehicle mode. Going by that logic, I just assumed Broadside was a badly done Starscream, LOL!

My friend was once telling me he traded a G1 Ironhide to a kid because at the time, he thought the head was broken off.

Vitvitsky is a genuine Slavic last name, so you are absolutely right, and the Witwickys are butchering their own last name, no surprise. Witwicky would be a Polish spelling of Vitvitsky.

My brother and I thought Starscream was a girl. I don't recall thinking Thundercracker was, so it must have been the voice.

We also thought Elita-1 was named "Leader-1", as found in GoBots. Maybe this was no accident; TF and GoBots were competing, at the time.

Ratchet was one of my favorite characters, but I never wanted his toy. The windshield-face isn't what bothered me. No, I thought he had no legs!
See, most of the promo artwork showed the robot standing on its base, and since nobody I knew had the real thing, I thought the toy was stuck that way, as a single inseparable unit.

When the Headmasters figures first came out one of photos I saw of Hardhead in robot mode had his legs mistransformed so the lower legs were still out to the side of his thighs in robot mode. It was for this reason I avoided buying him because it looked stupid. It was only after the figure had vanished from stores I realised my error and by then it was too late to buy one.
Thankfully though I got a great quality complete one from a car boot sale a few years ago for £5.
Autobloke in everything but name.

Even to this day, I have to wonder in the Ironhide and Ratchet sleds are intended to be the complete robot for the toys.

When the Female Autobots were introduced in the cartoon, I thought it was like the earlier introductions of say the Dinobots or Insecticons. So I asumed that there would be a sub-group of Female Autobots in the '86 toyline. I was super excited about this, but of course it never happened.

I originally thought that Frenzy was Soundwave in Transformers 1.
