TF:TM. Animated Prowl died both willingly and as a hero, so I don't really consider that to be tragic.

Animated Prowl went out like a champ.
G1 Prowl was quickly shot, turned grey with smoke coming from his mouth, and died. No fanfare or heroics or force ghosts. More tragic to me.

TFA Prowl sacrificed himself, it's pretty sad but it wasn't a death of suffering at the hands of the enemy.

Movie: I love Animated Prowl and his death was awesome and well-done.
When I saw Prowl spit smoke from his mouth and lose color, it was my wake up call that this movie wasn't fucking around. No more simple repairs, no more coming back next episode. This is what a Transformer looked like when it died. I still remember getting chills as a kid.

Animated, ESPECIALLY if you take into consideration a couple of his lines from earlier episodes such as his "I'm just happy to be alive in any form" in Human Error. The foreshadowing makes the sacrifice all the more meaningful.
That being said, Animated Prowl's death was in carrying out the ultimate sacrifice. Had he chosen to, he could have looked for another way, and had the series continued he'd have lived on as an Obi-Wan Kenobi style Energon ghost. G1 Prowl's death was a random senseless act of violence in a war.
There's no doubt in my mind that the death in Animated had the more meaning to it - but the death in 1986 was far more tragic, because ultimately they are at war and there are senseless deaths in war.

Animated Prowl's death was a lot more of a big deal than G1 Prowl's. I mean in Animated at least Prowl death got acknowledged. Heck even IDW Prowl (Dent)'s death was more tragic than G1 Movie Prowl'sHot Spot for HOF 2013
