When I saw Prowl spit smoke from his mouth and lose color, it was my wake up call that this movie wasn't fucking around. No more simple repairs, no more coming back next episode. The foreshadowing makes the sacrifice all the more meaningful. That being said, Animated Prowl's death was in carrying out the ultimate sacrifice. Had he chosen to, he could have looked for another way, and had the series continued he'd have lived on as an Obi-Wan Kenobi style Energon ghost. G1 Prowl's death was a random senseless act of violence in a war. There's no doubt in my mind that the death in Animated had the more meaning to it - but the death in 1986 was far more tragic, because ultimately they are at war and there are senseless deaths in war.
