I see your opinion, and disagree with it.

While I understand the loyalty to the original character "Scourge", he was a forgettable, and often times more "cannon fodder" type of character than anything. He was an unfit leader, strong yet unable to really focus that strength in to anything more than 7 minutes in an episode.

"RID Scourge" on the other hand proved himself a more capable leader than Megatron, and was only stopped because Megatron became Galvatron and went all "HAHAHA GOD POWERS OUT OF LEFT FIELD" on him. Otherwise, Scourge would have defeated both the Predacons and the Autobots, and the Decepticons would have risen to power and conquered all before them.

    Stupid random God powers.

Hasbro needs to pull their head out of their Movie Bumblebee obsessed asses and give us a repaint we actually want! Bring on Scourge!

RID Scourge was so cool and bada** that I had to get him when he was released. Even though I didn't collect RID figures.
To this day, RID Scourge is the only non-G1 toy I have purchased for my TF collection.
    RID Scourge is awesome!

I would like to point out that at no point has a Nemesis Prime acted as a nemesis to his associated Prime, nor has any Nemesis Prime ever been an avatar of nemesis, in the theatrical definition of the word.

Scourge, on the other hand, WAS a scourge on the Autobots. He also did a fair bit of scourging.

This is insanity that we're here right now.

I still remember having an IM conversation with you, Kick, during RiD's infancy about the likelihood of Hasbro releasing Black Convoy and how they were considering cab only at a Voyager pricepoint.

A couple months later, I was mailing armfuls of this majestic figure across the Canadian border because their TRUs were all, "Exclusive Transformers? Pfft... lame."

    But yeah.

Nemesis Prime its a mindless putz who takes his orders from a tiny Unicron.
Scourge has pink windows. Scourge is a badass. Scourge has a furious sword. Scourge leads the Decepticons. Scourge drove around in Fortress Maximus.

While I don't really see the point of this campaign, I suppose this is true for me as well. Scourge (and Cryotek) were the toys that made me stop being a Geewunner. Gateway toys...

Black Convoy is the only RiD/CR toy I have.

This was highly informative and entertaining, Kickback! Sadly, I disagree about using the name Scourge for a redeco of G2 Optimus, as I would prefer him to be able to slide easily into my post-season 3 G1-verse. Agree that he's a better character than G1 Scourge, for what it's worth!

I've been saying Scourge not Nemesis for the last ten years! (Good god, has it really been ten years since RID?) And since the news broke about G2 Prime I've also been predicting the Scourge repaint. I predict that we'll see one before the year is out. But yeah, it definitely needs to be called Scourge. It would just make sense since this year is the tenth anniversary for RID. We got Skybyte last year in the Botcon set and Sideburn in the club freebie this year and the Scourge repaint would just be icing on the cake.

Thanks for this great post, Kickback. I remember well the transition from Beast Machines to Car Robots/RID. I recall we used to eat up subbed/fan dubbed episodes of Car Robots because we weren't sure if the show would even be available in the US, much less having the toy lines being offered at major retailers. I bought most of the line from eBay and other online merchants before the decision was made to offer any of RID in the US. I loved the line so much, I bought every toy (including all the clear reissues and the store incentive spy changers). I started with the Car Brothers and my appetite was ravenous. After being fairly disappointed with the designs for Beast Machines (Nightscream anyone?) I was looking forward to some new change in direction. Car Robots filled a huge void.

More to the point of this thread, I recall buying Scourge/Black Convoy from a brick and mortar store here in NJ. Anyone who was in the Clifton NJ area should recall The Outer Limits, which was a comic book/ Manga shop. They got one shipment of some Car Robots and among them was Black Convoy. I immediately plunked down my money (I remember overpaying for him but not caring because I didn't have to wiat for shipping) and have never regretted the decision. I remember showing Black Convoy off to my collector friends and he immediately became sought after by nearly every Transformers collector I knew.

When he was released in the US, Scourge was impossible to find by me. I've only ever seen one on the shelves and that's because its box was ripped to hell. The entire Car Robots/RID line, and especially Scourge, helped reignite the franchise and certainly became one of the core blocks as the franchise grew into what it is today. Other toys can be named Nemesis Prime, but I firmly believe that any black repaint of either Laser Prime or the RTS homage to Laser Prime has to be called Scourge. To quote Arthur Miller, "Attention must be paid."

I think it's only a matter of time before we get our repaint of RTS G2 Prime mold ... and hopefully it's named properly (because I am totally for this campaign of Scourge, not Nemesis). And then, of course, the FansProject upgrade to make it even more badass!

Agree! Sadly I can't see them calling it scourge since we just got a generations scourge.

All that means is they already have the rights to the name.

Considering that Scourge #1 will be long off shelves by the time they get around to Scourge #2, naming shouldn't be an issue. However I'm not confident that Hasbro will consider anything less than two years time between releases long enough for any non-Bumblebee toys, or have the balls to properly name him when they eventually get around to him.

    WRONG!

BWII's Black Lio Convoy is the trendsetter, not Black Convoy/Scourge, who would come to be more then two years later. Black Lio Convoy was the very first redeco in black, teal and gray of an Optimus type. He was the first to appear in animation as his own character (BWII Episode 18: "The Black Lio Convoy"; aired first on July 29, 1998), with an entire episode dedicated to his supreme awesomeness. He, unlike Scourge, rather thoroughly pwned both sides in his episode.

It was the success of Black Lio Convoy that led Takara to try the formula again with Black Convoy/Scourge, they didn't expect the character to be as well received as he was. He was also popular enough that with Robot Masters Takara created a second Black Lio Convoy character for the fiction as a way to cheat the characters original death in the cartoon so that he could still be around and being all quietly awesome.

Black Big Convoy followed after in BWNeo, but he was a good guy, not appearing in the animation and only having a oneshot text story. Nucleon Quest Superconvoy followed after Black Convoy, but was also not only a good guy, but the actual original Optimus Prime.

With two successes in Black Lio Convoy and then Black Convoy, Takara started their trend of black redeco's of Convoys.
