Bloodied but unbowed, Optimus Prime stands over Megatron with his ion blaster leveled at his enemy. For purposes of this discussion, Hot Rod has been tackled and restrained by Kup so he cannot interefere in "Prime's fight".

With nothing to distract him except for Megatron's ruse, does Optimus Prime take his chance and put Megatron to death, or does he choose to spare him so Megatron can be captured to face justice?

Myself, I don't see Prime executing a beaten Megatron - it would go against everything he stood for. He might have made Megatron sweat (and hopefully kept the blaster on him until help arrived) but I don't believe he would have killed him.

Yeah, I think he would have, as well as should have.

And we would have see the world's first Prime face shot to upset the fandom with!

Hmmm. But that was the same Prime who said "Megatron must be stopped. No matter the cost"

I think at that moment Prime thought there was no other way of ending the war imo

Allow me to clarify :D  What I should have said that was that once he believed he had Megatron at his mercy - he wasn't going to go for the killing blow. It would reduce him to Megatron's level (i.e., "Such heroic nonsense!") to take life needlessly - in Prime's view, Megatron was defeated. Blowing his optics out the back of his helmet would the act of a brutal killer - not an honorable warrior and leader, which is what Prime surely was (well, before he started ripping off faces and so forth... :D )

I truely couldn't see prime pulling the trigger on megatron who was basically helpless at that point, i could see prime and the autobots taking in the rest of the decepticons as prisoners and letting justice take care of them.

I think he would've. This was the 'final' battle, or it was made to seem it. If he killed Megatron, it would've weakened the Decepticon threat. Just look at the Decepticons when they were leaderless: weak, confused and barbaric, struggling and fighting eachother for energon. Killing Megatron would be the best thing Prime had even done.

I think he definitely would have fired once megatron went for his gun, that's a certainty.

Megatron IS a weapon- there is no such thing as a dis-armed Megatron.

I don't think so. Prime is many things, but he's not a murderer. He'd probably blast the hell out of him, but not shoot to kill. Megatron would get hauled off by the other Decpticons, thrown out of Astrotrain, and still become Galvatron. Then Unicron would probably kill everyone unless Optimus realized that he needed to give the Matrix to Hot Rod.

Prime would have pulled the trigger. Without Hotrod's interference, Megatron would have pulled the gun on Prime, forcing him to shoot.

Let's stipulate that Megatron didn't pull the gun, I still say Prime would have pulled the trigger. Without Megatron at the helm of the Decepticon war machine, it would have only been a matter of time before the Autobots won and Prime knew it. In the G1 cartoon, it was pretty obvious that Megatron had taken care of everyone who was a legitimate threat to his power. With Megatron dead, there would be a huge power vaccum in the Decepticon army. Assuming Starscream still becomes the leader after Megatron, he wouldn't command the respect of the other Decepticons to be affective in prosecuting the war.

He would have taken off Megatron's head on Sherman Dam.

I think he does. Prime's fed up at this point and is set on putting a stop to Megatron once and for all. He's not letting anybody get in his way, as him plowing through Decepticons in his way proves. Also, the movie's nod towards darker themes allows us to accept the fact that the big good guy would off the big bad guy after a pretty visceral fight.

I agree with this post 100%. If anything, had Hot Rod not gotten in the way, Prime should have just obliterated Megatron once and for all.

Megs just killed everyone on Ironhide's ship (apparently) and a lot of bots in Autobot City. I think Prime's basically had enough. Meg's pushed him too far. Prime would've shot if Hot Rod hadnt intervened.

This ^ (he just killed ironhide for gods sake) also prime's comment

"you who are without mercy now plead for it? I thaught you were made of sterner stuff"

Is basiclly prime saying would you have spared me? I dont think so! Face your death like a man.

Hmmm. Good points - I can understand the "hero pushed too far".

The way I've always seen Optimus Prime (and if I'm wrong, feel free to point it out) is the TF equivalent of Superman. Truth, justice, and the American (Iacon?) Way. I can understand that after all Megatron has done, he would be justified in putting an end to Megatron - but then Optimus becomes Dirty Harry.

I do agree that once Megatron went for the pistol, Prime would have blasted him. But if there was no pistol or Megatron didn't get an opening to grab it, I don't see Prime going from hero to anti-hero, essentially.

1.if prime didn't shot megs and let him live you know he(megatron)would either kill optimus or come back at a later time and finish him.
    2. i'm sure prime would have fired if hot rod wasn't there.like members have said the 'cons would be in dissray and hopefully kill each other off.

    I think he wouldn't......

I think we would have had Megatron bluffing into surrendering and then arrested or capture him.

I think we would have kept him in prison something like Animated Optimus Prime did.
